FCDO warns of sexual assault risk in Turkey
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Turkey after a spate of sexual assaults on British nationals
The FCDO reported that in 2023, a total of 42 cases of sexual assault, including rape, were reported to British consular staff in the country.
Most of the cases reported occurred while the victim was on their summer holidays in a coastal tourist area.
Many of the crimes were committed at night by someone the victim had met during the day, including hotel and spa workers.
Additionally, the FCDO reported that there had been sexual assaults on minors visiting toilet facilities alone, with the agency recommending that parents and guardians should be “extra vigilant in these situations”.
The FCDO also updated its travel guidance for Ecuador last month.
