FCDO updates travel guidance for countries neighbouring Israel and Gaza
Advice for destinations such as Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon has been changed
With the continuing Israel-Gaza conflict, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued new advice for countries bordering the nations involved.
Egypt
Among other locations to avoid in Egypt, for those specifically close to Israel and Gaza, the FCDO advises:
- Against all travel to the Governorate of North Sinai
- Against all but essential travel to the northern part of the Governorate of South Sinai, beyond the St Catherine–Nuweibaa road, except for the coastal areas along the west and east of the peninsula
- Against all but essential travel to the Ismailiyah Governorate east of the Suez Canal.
For British nationals, the website states to read travel advice for Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Lebanon
The FCDO is advising ‘against all but essential travel to Lebanon’ due to ‘ongoing mortar and artillery exchanges in South Lebanon’.
It explains that tensions are ‘high’ and events could ‘escalate with little warning’, affecting and limiting routes out of the country.
It recommends that British nationals in Lebanon at the present time consider whether their need to remain in the country is essential.
Jordan
The FCDO advice related to the conflict states: “The crossings into Jordan from Israel might be closed at short notice. Check travel advice before trying to cross.”
Turkey and Cyprus
Nearby holiday destinations of Turkey and Cyprus have had no updates related to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Where the FCDO has advised against travel, if travellers go to these areas, their travel insurance could be invalidated and consular support in these areas will be limited too.
This is an ongoing and developing situation. The information in this article is correct at time of writing.
