Fatal resort fire triggers large-scale tourist evacuation in Dominican Republic

The fatal blaze triggered a large-scale evacuation and emergency consular response at one of the Caribbean's busiest tourist destinations

A fatal fire at a beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic has highlighted the complex emergency response operations that can follow major incidents involving international travellers.

One tourist died and nearly 1,700 guests were evacuated after a fire swept through the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe on 19 June.

Local authorities identified the victim as a 46-year-old Italian woman. Three people were transported to hospital, while six others were treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Initial findings indicated that strong winds and the presence of thatched roofing contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze across parts of the resort.

Emergency responders evacuated guests as the fire moved through the property, with authorities later confirming that the incident had been brought under control. Displaced guests were relocated to alternative accommodation.

The incident also triggered a significant consular response. According to Italian media reports, the Italian embassy assisted approximately 285 Italian tourists affected by the fire, including issuing emergency travel documents to travellers whose passports had been lost or destroyed and helping coordinate return travel arrangements.

Large-scale hotel incidents can generate a range of claims and operational challenges beyond medical treatment.

Emergency accommodation, replacement travel documents, flight changes, trip interruption claims, and repatriation support may all be required, particularly when large numbers of international tourists are affected simultaneously.

The incident also demonstrates the importance of coordination between local emergency services, consular authorities, tour operators, assistance companies, and insurers when responding to crises at major tourist destinations.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts confirmed that guests and staff were evacuated from the property and said the hotel would remain closed until further notice.

Bayahibe is one of the Dominican Republic’s most popular resort destinations and a key gateway for international visitors travelling to the country’s Caribbean coastline.

While authorities have stated that tourist activities elsewhere in the region have not been affected, investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
