Conflict drives demand for travel professionals as holidaymakers favour Europe
Middle East disruption and shifting UK traveller priorities are driving greater reliance on travel professionals, with European destinations emerging as the preferred choice for summer breaks
The conflict in the Middle East is prompting more UK travellers to book through travel professionals and opt for European destinations this summer, according to new research from British travel trade association ABTA.
Nearly one-third (31%) of UK adults said they were now more likely to book through a travel agent or tour operator than before the conflict. The main drivers are advisers’ knowledge (53%), expertise (44%), and the security offered by package holidays (41%).
Demand for packages has also increased, with 27% saying they are now more likely to book one. More than half (52%) cited the convenience of having everything arranged, while 48% valued the financial protection of a refund or replacement if a holiday cannot be provided.
Ongoing disruption to routes through the Middle East, including reduced flight capacity, is also shaping destination choices. Among those planning an overseas holiday in the next 12 months, 84% intend to travel within Europe. Spain remains the most popular destination (38%), followed by Italy (23%) and France (19%). However, long-haul demand remains resilient, with the US (13%), Australia (6%) and Japan (6%) all featuring in the top 10 destinations.
The research also highlights a trend towards later bookings. Around 30% of those planning a summer 2026 overseas holiday expect to book just two to four weeks before departure, while a further 10% plan to book less than two weeks before travelling.
Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive Officer of ABTA, said: “While global events are influencing how people plan and book their holidays, and where they go, our appetite to travel abroad this summer and beyond continues to be strong.”
