The aim of the partnership is to offer complimentary Covid-19 travel insurance to customers in the hope that it will improve confidence when booking travel in the future

The complimentary Covid-19 travel insurance protects travellers departing from Hong Kong to any destination in the airline’s route network between the end of December 2020 and 30 June 2021 (inclusive). To be eligible, travellers must also purchase their air tickets online via the official HK Express website or mobile app within the same period. During checkout, customers will automatically be enrolled in the complimentary policy, with an option to ‘opt-out’ should they wish.

Airline safety

HK Express is Hong Kong’s only low-cost carrier, and has implemented a series of measures and protocols, from deep cleaning to socially distanced seating arrangements, heightened sanitation and face-covering requirements, to improve customer safety and hopefully result in healthy journeys for all. The complimentary travel insurance plan is the latest effort by HK Express to look after all its passengers both on the ground and in the air.

Hospitalisation for Covid covered

The complimentary insurance plan covers up to US$100,000 in overseas medical hospitalisation expenses and a daily Covid-19 Hospital Cash stipend of $100 for up to 14 days. HK Express passengers will also have access to a 24-hour Chubb Assistance hotline and referral service, ensuring help is always available no matter what time it is.

It is certainly great news that more airlines around the world are offering complimentary travel insurance to their customers that covers the cost of Covid-19, should the customer become ill with the virus. However, customers should be mindful of the occasionally lower levels of cover available with some of these policies. For instance – US$100,000 would not last very long in a US hospital’s intensive care unit. Personal travel insurance that is purchased separately to an airline or tour operator’s offering should always be considered by any traveller.
