Bupa revamps SME health insurance proposition with expanded prevention and care tools
New preventative and clinical benefits have been added to SME health insurance to help reduce employee absence and improve workforce productivity
Bupa has unveiled a significant overhaul of its small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) health insurance proposition, introducing new preventative, clinical, and workplace support services designed to help SMEs improve employee health, reduce absence, and strengthen retention.
The enhancements, available to all SME policyholders, combine expanded everyday healthcare access with preventative services. These include annual dental check-ups and hygiene appointments across more than 360 Bupa Dental Care practices, 15-minute face-to-face GP appointments at 69 Bupa health centres, alongside digital GP services, DNA testing for early risk detection in conditions including breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, strengthened mental health support via Members First talking therapies, and employee engagement tools such as JAAQ at Work. SMEs also receive HR and employment law support via WorkNest.
According to Bupa modelling, UK SMEs could see meaningful productivity gains from improved workforce health, with sickness absence currently accounting for around 150 million lost working days annually. The insurer estimates that reducing absence by just one day per employee each year could generate more than £2 billion in economic value for small businesses.
Dan Sullivan, Director of Product and Proposition at Bupa UK Insurance, said that SMEs were under pressure as sickness absence reaches record levels, with even one absence affecting operations. He said the enhanced proposition aimed to help employers keep staff healthier, access support earlier, and return to work sooner, while competing with larger corporates through integrated dental, preventative, and mental health benefits.
The launch strengthens Bupa’s SME offering with connected care pathways spanning digital, primary, and specialist services across the employee health journey.
