Allianz reveals top Valentine’s Day destinations for US travellers

Mexico and the state of Florida top the list, but international bookings remain far below domestic destinations for American travellers

Allianz Global Assistance has identified Mexico and the state of Florida as the top Valentine’s Day destinations for US travellers this year.

The company’s 2022 Top Valentine’s Day destinations review placed four Floridian destinations in the top spots for domestic (US) travel, while four Mexican destinations topped the international travel list. The top ten domestic destinations are:

  1. Orlando, Florida
  2. Las Vegas, Nevada
  3. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  4. Miami, Florida
  5. Phoenix, Arizona
  6. Fort Myers, Florida
  7. Salt Lake City, Utah
  8. Tampa, Florida
  9. New York, New York
  10. Los Angeles, California.

The list reflects similar results to a survey by sister business Allianz Partners, which covered the top US rental car destinations during the winter 2021 travel season. That survey also reported Orlando, Las Vegas, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Phoenix as some of its top 10 destinations.

Meanwhile, the favourite international destinations are:

  1. Cancun, Mexico
  2. Mexico City, Mexico
  3. Los Cabos, Mexico
  4. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
  5. Montego Bay, Jamaica
  6. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  7. Aruba
  8. Nassau, Bahamas
  9. Liberia, Costa Rica
  10. Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.

Most US travellers continue to favour domestic holiday locations

However, the survey, which analysed the destination decisions of customers who went through ‘the online booking process of airfare paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance,’ also stated that domestic travel continues to be favoured by most US travellers, with 81 per cent of trips being taken being to locations within the US.

Just 19 per cent of bookings were for international destinations, in line with the usual post-pandemic travel trends. However, Allianz said that the choice of destinations appeared to be ‘further proof that Americans are enticed by warm weather and tropical beaches’.

“Travellers are ready to spend time away from home with their special someone this Valentine’s Day,” said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications at Allianz Partners.
