The insurer will work with the AI firm to deploy safety-focused tools across claims, operations, and governance while maintaining human oversight in high-stakes decisions

Allianz has formed a global partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic to accelerate the adoption of responsible AI across its insurance operations, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, transparency, and customer trust.

The collaboration will focus on three Group-wide projects intended to support Allianz employees, automate core processes, and strengthen governance around AI-driven decisions.

“With this partnership, Allianz is taking a decisive step to address critical AI challenges in insurance. Anthropic’s focus on safety and transparency complements our strong dedication to customer excellence and stakeholder trust,” said Oliver Bäte, CEO of Allianz SE.

Anthropic CEO and Co-Founder Dario Amodei said insurance presented particularly high stakes for AI adoption. “Insurance is an industry where the stakes of using AI are particularly high: the decisions can affect millions of people… we look forward to working together to make insurance better for those who depend on it,” he said.

The first area of collaboration focuses on empowering employees and modernising software development. Anthropic’s Claude models will be integrated into Allianz’s internal AI platform and made available to staff across the group. The Claude Code tool is already being used by thousands of Allianz developers, while Model Context Protocols will allow secure connections between data sources and applications.

A second workstream will develop AI agents capable of automating multi-step workflows, including claims intake and processing in motor and health insurance. Allianz said this could reduce manual handling, speed up first payments, and improve the experience for claimants. Human oversight will remain central, particularly for sensitive or complex cases.

The third project aims to enhance transparency and compliance by logging AI decisions, rationales and data sources, ensuring traceability and alignment with regulatory requirements.

The ITIJ team recently asked industry experts how insurers were using automation and AI to streamline simple claims and free up teams to focus on more complex cases.
