When an elephant encounter turns critical
Annick Breton of Alliance International Medical Services (AIMS) describes how her company came to the aid of a French tourist who was trampled by an elephant
Sometimes the most unforgettable journeys take a turn no-one could expect. At the border of South Africa and Botswana, an adventurous safari became a fight for survival when an elephant encounter ended in tragedy.
A French traveller was trampled and crushed by an elephant, sustaining multiple traumatic injuries: a severe open laceration to the forearm, a displaced tibial plateau fracture, and several rib fractures.
In the wilderness, far from advanced medical care, every minute mattered. The patient was flown into Johannesburg, South Africa, and admitted to Milpark Hospital. The complicated and dangerous nature of the injuries presented a medical challenge.
The forearm wound was open and contaminated, requiring urgent debridement and careful wound management to avoid infection.
The right tibial plateau fracture needed stabilisation with external fixation, with plans for open reduction internal fixation surgery once the patient was stable, rib fractures, although not displaced, carried the constant threat of respiratory complications, demanding close monitoring and effective pain control.
This was not just about treating injuries, it was about preserving life and preventing long-term disability.
The team is activated
AIMS activated their team to ensure the patient received the best treatment possible at Milpark Hospital, until they were well enough to be medically repatriated home under the care of a medical escort team from their country of origin. AIMS assisted in the safe transportation of the medical escorts and the patient to Oliver Thambo International Airport, where a bed at the airport clinic had been secured, with tarmac access to board the flight.
This story highlights the critical need for prompt, knowledgeable aid in Africa’s most isolated areas
Every step was timed, and every detail managed with precision. The mission reflected AIMS’ hallmark expertise in coordinating complex cases from arranging surgical intervention and securing the right facility to ensuring continuity of care throughout.
We worked closely with the treating team to confirm follow-up plans were in place and provided the insurer with consistent updates, oversight, and cost containment. This seamless management allowed the medical providers to focus on treatment, while AIMS ensured the process remained efficient, transparent, and in the best interests of both patient and insurer.
Elephant incidents are uncommon but catastrophic, which is why this is important. Beyond the savannah drama, this story highlights the critical need for prompt, knowledgeable aid in Africa’s most isolated areas. It serves as a reminder to healthcare professionals, insurance companies, and aid programs of the importance of trusted networks.
At AIMS, our mission is not only about humanity, dignity and respect but simply to be there when it matters most, from the first call to the last mile.
