Tyrol Air Ambulance: 50 years of bringing patients home

Tyrol Air Ambulance provides both air ambulance services and medical and technical travel assistance. What are the main advantages of bringing these different areas of expertise together within one organisation?

The main advantage is that both business units continuously learn from each other, creating valuable synergies and improving processes through shared knowledge and operational expertise. Bringing the areas together also gives us a much better understanding of our customers’ needs and the medical, technical, and logistical challenges they may face.

At the same time, both business units operate independently and autonomously. This ensures clear responsibilities, transparent processes, and the necessary independence for our customers. In this way, we combine the benefits of shared expertise and close cooperation with the transparency and specialisation that each business unit requires.

How does the combination of air ambulance and travel assistance shape the way you support patients and travellers – from the initial emergency or request for assistance through to their safe return home?

The combination of air ambulance and travel assistance enables us to support patients and travellers throughout their entire journey. Each business unit contributes its specialised expertise, while close cooperation helps us understand and respond to the medical, technical, and logistical challenges of incidents abroad.

Both self-operating units ensure clear responsibilities and transparency, while benefiting from each other’s knowledge and experience. This creates a coordinated approach focused on providing the right support at every stage, with the focus on the safety and individual needs of the patient.

Providing such a broad range of services internationally must also present challenges. What are the most demanding aspects of coordinating medical, technical, and logistical assistance across different countries and situations?

One of the biggest challenges is the complexity of working across different countries, healthcare systems, and local conditions. Language barriers, local regulations, infrastructure, and access to appropriate medical care can all vary significantly. This becomes even more demanding in geographically remote or crisis-affected regions, where resources and transport options may be limited.

Tyrol Air Ambulance carried out its first international air ambulance mission 50 years ago. How has the organisation and its approach to international assistance evolved over those five decades, and what do you see as the priorities for the next chapter?

Over the past 50 years, air ambulance operations have evolved significantly. What began with pioneering repatriation missions with simple equipment has developed into a highly specialised service with dedicated aircraft and state-of-the-art equipment, experienced medical crews, and sophisticated operational processes. Today, flight operations are much more regulated, and crises which are quite usual nowadays were almost unknown 50 years ago.

Safety and quality of medical care have always been most important to us, and these remain our priorities for the future. Looking ahead, we will continue to invest in our aircraft, medical equipment, and staff experience. We also need to remain prepared for increasingly complex missions.

After 50 years, our goal remains the same: to bring patients home safely.
