Douglas B. Weisz, Sr Director of Business Development at REVA, talks to ITIJ about changes in the industry, staying competitive, and their Global Alliance Program

You have been with REVA for almost 14 years. What are the biggest changes the industry has experienced in that time, and how has REVA reacted to those changes or challenges?

Over the past two decades, the air ambulance industry has changed dramatically. Costs have gone up across the board, from fuel and regulatory compliance to aircraft maintenance and clinical staffing. At the same time, clients expect faster response times, more transparency, and a higher level of service.

Aircraft have also evolved. Years ago, most operators relied on smaller regional planes. Today, fleets are purpose-built and medically equipped to handle a wider range of missions, including long-distance intensive care transports. REVA has kept pace with these changes. We have grown from a regional fleet to a diverse mix of mid-range jets, turboprops, seaplanes, and specialised platforms. This allows us to fly farther, respond faster, and care for more complex patients while meeting higher regulatory standards.

The complexity of cases has increased as well. It is no longer just about simply moving a patient. Assistance companies and insurers now expect full-service solutions, coordinating bed placements, visas, security, and group support services. The types of payers have also expanded. While travel insurance and assistance companies were once our primary clients, we now work with US health insurers, government agencies, NGOs, and corporate programmes. These changes have created new opportunities but also raised expectations for service and accountability.

REVA has responded by expanding our global footprint. We have opened bases across the US, the Caribbean, and Europe. We have invested heavily in our operations and medical teams to support complex missions anywhere in the world. We have also embraced technology to improve coordination and give clients real-time visibility throughout each mission.

How has REVA navigated these changes and remained competitive in such a rapidly evolving industry?

Our strategy has focused on operational excellence, clinical capability, and strong partnerships. Over the years, REVA has grown from a regional operator into a global provider by investing in people, aircraft, and systems.

We’ve expanded our 24-hour operations centre and introduced systems that enable real-time mission tracking, enhanced communication, and closer coordination with clients and partners. By accessing global talent with regional experts, we’ve adopted a seamless coverage model across time zones, ensuring uninterrupted mission management and care delivery anywhere in the world.

On the medical side, we continue to raise the bar. Our teams are trained to handle advanced interventions in the air, including ECMO, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and neonatal intensive care. This capability allows us to support even the most complex cases.

Strategically, we have built strong relationships with local providers, hospitals, payers, and governments. These partnerships help us secure permits, ground services, pre-authorisations, and admissions more efficiently. We have also adapted our pricing models and reporting structures to meet the expectations of new payer groups. In a competitive marketplace, our reputation for safety, reliability, and clinical excellence is one of our greatest strengths.

You have close partnerships around the world through your Global Alliance Program. How do you choose who to work with, and how do you maintain those relationships?

Our Global Alliance Program is built on the belief that great outcomes depend on great partnerships. We are very selective about who we work with. We look for partners with the right accreditations, strong clinical capabilities, and a proven track record of patient outcomes.

These partnerships allow us to leverage local expertise and infrastructure to speed up bed placements, medical intake, and care transitions. Regional providers play a key role in mission readiness, ground support, and efficient patient discharges. Their involvement helps us manage complex cases in less than familiar regions with the same precision and reliability our clients expect everywhere.

Ground representation is another critical piece. We work with vetted ground ambulance providers, local agents, and security providers to ensure continuity of care from start to finish. Local partnerships help expedite permits, arrange security, and support crews and patients on the ground.

We maintain these relationships through regular audits, shared training, feedback loops, and long-term trust. Together, this global network allows us to deliver consistent, high-quality care anywhere in the world.

What’s next for REVA? How do you see the company evolving over the next few years?

Looking ahead, REVA is focused on strategic growth, innovation, and continuing to lead in a changing industry.

Geographically, we plan to keep expanding our services in key markets across the Americas, Europe, and beyond. This will help us respond faster and more efficiently wherever patients need us.

Operationally, we are strengthening our ability to manage increasingly complex cases. We are growing our global talent base and ensuring uninterrupted service and expertise around the world. We are also working to make coordination with clients even faster and more transparent.

Clinically, we are continuing to invest in advanced medical capabilities and training. As we see sicker patients and more clinically complex transports, our teams are equipped to manage high acuity cases with interventions like ECMO, neonatal intensive care, and cardiac support. Our ECMO programme, which includes transatlantic missions and a global network of specialists, reflects our commitment to delivering critical care at the highest level.

We are also continuing to refine and expand our seaplane partnership in the Bahamas, which has become a vital link for patients in remote areas needing access to advanced care. This programme is a great example of how we combine innovation, clinical readiness, and regional expertise to solve real-world challenges.

On the technology side, we are moving toward smarter, data-driven operations that support faster decision-making and more efficient mission planning. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools, we are enhancing real-time data analysis, automating routine workflows, and improving resource allocation. These advancements allow us to anticipate mission needs, reduce response times, and optimise mission outcomes.

Ultimately, our goal is to remain the partner of choice for a diverse range of clients, including travel assistance companies, insurance providers, hospital systems, government agencies, and corporate health programmes. We will do that by combining operational strength, clinical excellence, and the trusted relationships we have built over more than three decades. As the industry continues to evolve, we remain committed to delivering solutions that are not only clinically advanced and operationally sound but also built on the trust and reliability our partners have come to expect.

Our strategy has focused on operational excellence, clinical capability, and strong partnerships
