Safe return after severe trauma
We speak to Dr Antonio Magliocca, Founder and Leader of BMC h24 Travel Assistance, about a recent case that involved careful coordinated medical assistance from Venice to the UK
Managing complex trauma cases abroad requires rapid coordination, medical expertise, and seamless logistics. In this case, BMC h24 Travel Assistance successfully managed the care and repatriation of a severely injured British patient in Venice, ensuring continuity of medical monitoring and a safe return home through coordinated air and ground medical transport.
Initial emergency and hospital care
During a stay in Venice, a British traveller sustained multiple traumatic injuries and was admitted to a local hospital for urgent treatment. BMC h24 Travel Assistance was activated on a business-to-business (B2B) basis to support the patient throughout the medical journey, ensuring both clinical oversight and logistical coordination.
The patient received specialised treatment at a hospital in Venice, where local medical teams stabilised their condition and managed their trauma. Throughout the hospitalisation, BMC maintained regular communication with hospital staff and the assistance partner, monitoring the patient’s progress and planning the safest next steps once discharge became possible.
Post-discharge medical monitoring
Following discharge from the hospital, the patient was not yet fully independent and required continued medical observation. Due to Venice’s unique geography, BMC arranged transport by hydro-taxi from the hospital to the patient’s hotel, ensuring a safe and comfortable transfer through the city’s canal system.
To maintain close medical supervision, BMC also organised a doctor’s visit to the hotel. The physician conducted a face-to-face assessment, evaluating the patient’s condition after discharge and confirming permission to travel. This visit was essential to reassess pain management, mobility, and overall clinical stability before authorising international travel.
The in-person consultation allowed the medical team to determine the safest method for repatriation and confirm that the patient could travel with medical escort rather than requiring a full air ambulance.
Coordinating the medical repatriation
Once the patient was cleared for travel, BMC Travel Assistance organised the full repatriation plan. The transfer from the hotel to the airport required specialised logistics due to Venice’s waterways. BMC arranged hydro-ambulance transport, allowing the patient to be safely transferred by medical boat to the airport.
A professional medical escort accompanied the patient on the commercial flight to the UK. The escort travelled with essential medical equipment, including:
• A cardiac monitor and defibrillator
• An oxygen concentrator
• Additional medical supplies to manage any complications during the journey. Continuous monitoring throughout the flight ensured the patient’s condition remained stable during the international transfer.
Final transfer and safe arrival home
Upon arrival in the UK, BMC coordinated the final stage of the journey. A ground ambulance was arranged in Manchester to meet the aircraft and transport the patient safely to their home in Halifax.
The patient completed the journey without complications and was able to continue recovery in the comfort of their home environment.
This case highlights the importance of integrated medical and logistical coordination in complex trauma situations abroad. Through close collaboration with healthcare providers, on-site medical assessment, and carefully planned multimodal transport, BMC Travel Assistance ensured the patient’s safe return from Venice to the UK.
The successful outcome demonstrates BMC’s ability to manage challenging repatriations – even in geographically complex environments – while maintaining high standards of patient care and operational efficiency.
