Gitte Bach, President and CEO at New Frontier Group, talks to ITIJ about the challenges and opportunities in healthcare

Does political conflict and civil unrest hinder the services you offer when it comes to cross-border healthcare?

In times of conflict the uncertainty and challenges faced by individuals seeking healthcare can be overwhelming, and it's our mission to ease those concerns.

Conflicts present challenges to cross-border healthcare services, but we have implemented strategies to mitigate these:
• 24/7 assistance: our round-the-clock customer service ensures we can respond rapidly to emerging situations and coordinate care. We provide 24-hour assistance, coordinating lodging, transport, and healthcare appointments for our members
•Telehealth: we've fully integrated global telehealth services into our suite of solutions. This allows us to provide care remotely when physical access is limited
• Extensive care access models: we maintain a vast and diverse network of healthcare providers and partners across the globe. This allows us to quickly adapt and find alternative care options when certain regions become unstable
• Personalised patient care coordination: we can tailor our approach to each member's specific needs, considering the political situation in their location and finding the best solution
• Continuous monitoring and adaptation: we monitor situations and adapt our strategies accordingly. Our focus on future-thinking solutions and continuous improvement initiatives ensures we're always prepared to face new challenges.

Cost management can bring many challenges, especially when billing accuracy, medical inflation and medical infrastructure vary so much from country to country. What solutions do New Frontier Group have to help mitigate such problems?

Our commitment is to go beyond merely managing costs; it’s about providing personalised solutions that alleviate the burdens in a particular area, foster strong partnerships, and ensure that those relying on our services receive the best possible care regardless of geography.

Our approach to mitigate the variation of needs is adaptive, so we can address complexities of varied healthcare systems worldwide. Our solutions include:
• Global expertise and partnerships: we can address challenges that arise with a personal touch, tailoring solutions to fit the specific needs of each country. Our goal is to reduce the stress on our clients while ensuring members receive quality care regardless of geographical differences. We have also worked hard to establish partnerships with local healthcare experts
• Research and development: we continuously research and adjust to new cost management strategies from different countries. For instance, we’ve integrated value-based care principles; we've implemented technology to adapt to varying medical infrastructures; and we’ve looked in detail around drivers of medical inflation across the globe to find commonalities and differences we need to consider in building the best cost-management approach
•Tailored solutions: we have always offered a menu of options because even programmes within a region can have different needs (i.e. student, travel, expat). This has required us to build offerings that can be tailored to meet the situation of our client, their location, and programmes
• Continuous improvement monitoring: we recognise that medical costs fluctuate at different rates globally, and without
continuous review, managing these costs can be overwhelming. We monitor inflation trends, allowing us to adapt our strategies in real-time. We try to stay ahead of potential issues, ensuring that our clients benefit from consistent, cost-effective solutions.

Telehealth has transformed the healthcare sphere. What new technology do you think is next on the horizon that you might embrace?

Telehealth really has been a game-changer. And one area that I find fascinating is artificial intelligence (AI). We’re already seeing the beginning of AI in diagnostics and treatment planning, but the potential for it to revolutionise healthcare delivery is enormous.

Then there's blockchain tech. By providing a secure way to handle healthcare data and improving how we share information across borders, blockchain could make cross-border healthcare not just easier, but also safer.

I think wearable devices are just scratching the surface in the healthcare treatment process. Think about the possibilities – wearables that alert both patients and providers before something becomes an issue. This is a big step towards more proactive, personalised care.

You are attending ITIC Global in Vienna. Can you tell us what you are hoping to get out of the conference this year?

I’ve been attending ITIC for over a decade and the in-person connections often spark some of the best ideas. When it comes to knowledge sharing, ITIC Global is unmatched. ITIC also gives us the platform to share our innovations, and aligns with our mission to stay ahead of the curve – finding future-thinking solutions in the ever-evolving world of global healthcare.
