The personal touch
Louis-Philippe Loiselle Fortier, Vice-President of Strategic Initiatives and Business Development at Airmedic, tells ITIJ about their aircraft, clinical expertise, and personalised repatriation
Can you tell us about your fleet and the approach the whole team takes towards a patient-centric ethos?
Airmedic’s fleet consists of aircraft, including the PC-12 and Learjet 45XR, each carefully selected to meet a range of medical transport needs. The PC-12 is ideal for reaching remote areas, thanks to its ability to land on shorter airstrips, significantly reducing ground transport times.
The Learjet 45XR, on the other hand, allows for international transport, providing patients with optimal speed and comfort. Our patient-centric approach revolves around ensuring safety, comfort, and continuity of care while offering adaptative solutions. Having multiple aircraft allows us to provide fast deployments and even offer wing-to-wing transport within our fleet.
Your aircraft have the capacity to cover most of Canada and the United States. Can you explain more about how you provide efficient and accessible medical services in those regions?
Our PC-12 is designed to be cost-effective on short and medium distances compared to jet, allowing us to cover most of Canada and the United States and allowing us to offer more accessible services. With our Learjet 45XR, we can swiftly reach further distances in North America and international destinations, significantly reducing travel time and minimising the total days of deployment. This combination of reach, efficiency, and lower operational costs ensure that we can provide rapid response and medical evacuation services, even in the most complex cases.
Accreditation is increasingly vital in the industry. Can you tell us about the prestigious QMENTUM accreditation you have achieved, and why it’s so important?
Airmedic is proud to be the only air medical service in Quebec to achieve the QMENTUM accreditation with Air Medical Standards from Accreditation Canada. After a rigorous continuing process, this certification is granted to organisations that meet the highest standards of quality and safety in healthcare, including everything from clinical protocols to staff training and patient safety measures. Achieving this accreditation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to maintaining best practices in all aspects of our operations. For patients and partners, QMENTUM is a validation of the reliability, safety, and excellence we strive to provide every day.
Your in-flight crew has clinical expertise and diverse experience. Why is this so important and why do you think this works so well?
Our flight medical teams including nurses, respiratory therapists and physicians, are highly skilled professionals with extensive experience in handling a wide variety of medical instances. This includes everything from advanced critical care to neonatal transport, ensuring that patients with unique or complex medical needs receive expert care during flight. The diverse backgrounds of our crew members, many of whom have worked in emergency medical services, intensive care units, and trauma settings, allow them to approach each situation with confidence and precision. This depth of experience is particularly important at altitude, where the challenges of patient care are amplified.
Personalised repatriation is becoming increasingly popular. How does Airmedic respond to the unique needs of individuals?
We understand that every patient is unique, so we tailor our services to meet those needs. From pre-flight medical assessments, bed finding, to tailored in-flight care and post-evacuation follow-ups, our service is built around providing personalised, compassionate care that extends beyond the flight. Whether it’s arranging for specialised medical equipment or addressing the personal comfort needs of the patient, we take care of all aspects of the repatriation process ensuring that every detail is considered for a smooth and safe transport.
