Tyrol Air Ambulance (TAA)

Captain Harald Lazar, Operations Director at Tyrol Air Ambulance (TAA), speaks to ITIJ about operating in war zones, increasing costs, and the wellbeing of patients

How do active war zones complicate flight planning for medical evacuation missions?

Such war zones are volatile in activity and they may have an impact in other geographical regions. An active example is the Gaza conflict causing an increased risk to operating in the Southern Red Sea.

In what ways have rising operational costs affected the sustainability of medical flights in conflict regions?

Having to avoid conflict regions ultimately results in longer flight times, and sometimes even an additional fuel stop. This will increase costs in any case.

How do flight diversions and longer routes around unsafe airspace impact patient outcomes during urgent medical transfers?

Flying a longer route has to be considered in the decision as to whether a mission is doable, since the additional flying time or even additional landing may, depending on the condition of the patient, become a showstopper for that request.

What pricing challenges do operators face when balancing affordability for patients with the increased expenses of operating in or near war zones?

For TAA the wellbeing paired with the safety and security of the flight is indisputable. This may, depending on the outcome of the final risk assessment for the flight, result in a cost increase to be taken into account in the planning phase.

What strategies are air ambulance providers adopting to ensure both safety and timely care when flying near conflict zones?

Such zones need to be monitored and factored constantly to have all data available once the quote is calculated. This monitoring requires up-to-date intelligence using third party specialists. However, the final decision for a mission is taken shortly before the flight leaves to minimise the impact of changing conditions.
