One week, five nations: honouring the departed across the Balkans

This summer, our repatriation service, Princivali International, completed one of its most logistically complex and emotionally meaningful weeks to date – coordinating multiple international funeral repatriations from five countries across the Balkans: Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Albania.

Over just seven days, our team facilitated the safe return of both human remains and cremated remains (urns) to destinations across the globe, including Germany, Canada, Australia, Slovakia, and Poland. These were not just cases – they were stories of lives cut short far from home and families relying on us to bring their loved ones back with dignity and care.

A week of heavy responsibility

The calls came in day and night – from consulates, grieving family members, funeral homes, and insurance providers. Each case presented unique challenges, shaped by the laws, languages, and logistics of the countries involved. But what they all had in common was urgency, and the need for trust.

During this one week, we successfully completed body repatriations to Germany, Slovakia, and Australia, and urn repatriations to Canada and Poland.

These required coordination across ministries, airlines, embassies, and local municipalities – often in remote or rural regions of the Balkans, where resources are limited and procedures can vary widely.

Our services included:

• Securing medical and death certificates

• Translating documents and arranging consular approvals

• Organising embalming and hygienic preparations to international standards

• Managing cremation and legal transport of urns

• Coordinating flight bookings and customs clearances.

What might take others weeks, we accomplished in days – without compromising on professionalism or compassion.

Regional expertise, global delivery

The Balkan region presents unique challenges for repatriation: multiple legal systems, diverse religious customs, and logistical limitations in smaller towns and rural areas. Our strength lies in understanding these complexities and knowing how to navigate them.

In Croatia, we worked closely with our partners from Poland to arrange for the cremation of a Polish national, and subsequent urn transportation. In Montenegro, we organised coffin repatriation for a case involving a German citizen.

In Albania, where cremation infrastructure is still developing, we arranged cross-border transport to Croatia for a cremation, before transferring the urn to Canada.

From Serbia we transported the remains of an Australian citizen to Croatia, where we did the embalming and prepared all documents ahead of the coffin’s transportation to Sydney.

With on-the-ground contacts and multilingual staff, our team ensured no case was delayed or mishandled.

In Bosnia we took care of a Slovakian citizen who had passed away in a hospital, and managed to return their body to Žilina in a short time.
