One patient, three cities, one seamless assistance operation
Murat Keçik from Remed Assistance recounts a complicated case of a patient with heart problems
A chest pain complaint became a complex journey across three cities and ended with a carefully managed return home. For Remed Assistance, this was not simply a transfer. It required rapid access to medical records, the right hospital, coordinated treatment, ground transport, flight planning and medical escort support – delivered as one continuous operation.
When every minute mattered
A 59-year-old man arrived at Yozgat City Hospital with chest pain. Tests showed that three major blood vessels supplying the heart were severely narrowed or blocked. When the first attempt to reopen them was unsuccessful, his doctors advised transfer to a centre with more advanced treatment options.
The case was referred to Remed Assistance on a Friday evening. We contacted the family, collected the available reports and began assessing suitable hospitals without delay. From that point, the priority was clear: find a centre able to offer the needed care while keeping the patient’s journey safe, timely and financially transparent.
The search for the right expertise
Sivas, Ankara and Kayseri were reviewed as possible destinations. Ankara emerged as the best option because a hospital in our network could provide advanced options, including Rotablator and intravascular lithotripsy, for the heavily hardened blockages. We checked availability, treatment capability and overall suitability, then shared the proposed plan and estimated costs. Once approval was received, a ground ambulance transfer from Yozgat to Ankara was arranged.
The intervention that changed the course
In Ankara, the medical team used a Rotablator to carefully break down the hardened material and intravascular lithotripsy to help open the affected vessels, avoiding the need for openheart bypass surgery. The most urgent vessel was treated first and a stent was placed successfully. To reduce the strain of completing everything at once, the remaining treatment was planned as a second stage. Two days later, the other two vessels were also treated successfully.
The patient’s condition improved, and the more invasive surgical option was avoided.
From successful treatment to a safe journey home
Once the patient was stable and cleared to travel, planning shifted to the return journey. As there was no direct flight from Ankara to his final destination, the correspondent requested that the patient be transferred to Istanbul.
Remed Assistance then selected a suitable hospital in Istanbul and coordinated the domestic flight, medical escort and hospital handover as a single plan, helping maintain continuity between treatment and travel.
After follow-up in Istanbul, the international flight was confirmed. The correspondent’s medical escort travelled to Istanbul for a clear clinical handover. On departure day, the patient and escort were taken to the airport by ground ambulance, completing a journey that had begun in Yozgat and continued through Ankara and Istanbul. The patient returned home safely, with every stage linked by a single coordination team.
The case shows how effective assistance depends on fast decisions, trusted providers and disciplined communication – especially when care, transport and crossborder travel must work together.

Issue
When a parent or guardian becomes seriously ill overseas, assistance providers face a complex challenge that extends well beyond clinical care. Although these cases are relatively rare, in this issue we look at how safeguarding dependent children requires careful planning, legal awareness, and close international coordination.
