Navigating complex neurotrauma repatriation from the UAE
Waseem El Tanahi, Business Development Director at CONNEX Assistance, recounts a case managed by his company
In August 2025, CONNEX Assistance was commissioned by IMA Group to coordinate the medical repatriation of a French national who had sustained a severe cranial injury during a stopover in Dubai. The patient was admitted to Rashid Hospital following a fall that necessitated a decompressive craniectomy. After several months of stabilisation under the care of the hospital’s neurology team, he was cleared for transfer to France. The case required rapid, multi-stakeholder coordination involving IMA Group medical operations, hospital administration, immigration authorities, airport personnel, and the patient’s family; all orchestrated by the CONNEX Assistance UAE team.
Medical, logistical and legal challenges
This case presented unique medical, logistical and legal challenges which drew upon CONNEX Assistance’s deep familiarity with local medical systems and operational expertise in the UAE. Key obstacles included visa irregularities, airline baggage recovery, surgical aftercare considerations, and transport compliance for a medically fragile patient.
The patient’s temporary UAE visa had expired, incurring potential overstay penalties and complications at border exit. CONNEX Assistance field coordinators visited Dubai airport authorities and coordinated with the hospital administration to secure an official waiver, ensuring the patient could exit legally and without financial liability or delays.
Simultaneously, CONNEX Assistance located and recovered the patient’s unclaimed luggage from the airline, which had remained in custody since the incident. The belongings were delivered directly to the patient’s wife at her hotel in Dubai.
Post-operative and cultural considerations
As a post-craniectomy patient, the individual required a protective helmet during the transfer. Upon arrival in Dubai, the French medical escort team provided by IMA Group conducted a bedside assessment and confirmed the patient was fit to fly with appropriate equipment.
CONNEX Assistance arranged all ground movements for the escort team, hospital visits and airport transfer with tarmac access
A particularly sensitive issue emerged regarding the patient’s removed skull fragment. Although not medically required for follow-up care in France (as a prosthesis was planned), the patient’s family requested its return for religious and cultural reasons, stating it could not be left behind. This created a unique challenge: ensuring the fragment’s transportation in compliance with Dubai airport regulations while also being respectful of the family’s wishes. CONNEX Assistance explored and facilitated the safest and most culturally sensitive solution – ensuring regulatory approval and proper documentation were in place for its lawful and respectful transfer.
Transport and final clearance
CONNEX Assistance arranged all ground movements for the escort team, hospital visits and airport transfer with tarmac access. On the day of departure, the patient was transported by ambulance with airside clearance, while the wife and escort team followed by taxi.
Stretcher assistance was pre-arranged at Dubai International Airport to ensure a seamless transfer.
The patient departed Dubai safely under medical escort, in stable condition and with all logistical requirements met. The operation was completed without incident, within four days of initial mobilisation.
