Munich to Boston: care across continents
Laura Lockley explains how AD Medical Air Assist came to the rescue to take a patient home to the US from Germany
A request from Munich came with one simple wish: to get a muchloved husband, father and teacher safely home to Boston, in the US state of Massachusetts. Making that possible required meticulous planning, international collaboration and a commitment to putting the patient and his family at the centre of every decision.
Every call, no matter how late or complex, ensured that every party was aligned
In preparation for the mission, there were numerous conference calls involving treating doctors, our clinical leads, operational directors and the medical team who would receive the patient in Boston. With time zones and busy schedules working against us, coordinating across multiple teams was no small task. Every call, no matter how late or complex, ensured that every party was aligned, reassured and confident in their role so that the patient could be transported safely.
A few days later, our medical escort was on a flight to Munich, ready to meet the family and begin the journey to Boston. Airports often present their own challenges, and Munich was no exception. With the patient and our medic requiring airside access and the family travelling through normal passenger channels, communication was vital to keep everyone reassured and connected.
Even the on-site ambulance became briefly lost within the airport complex before eventually arriving at the medical room. Then, just as boarding was about to begin, the ambulift broke down. Everyone held their breath for a moment, but the ground teams acted quickly and a replacement was brought into service without disrupting the transfer.
Ready to fly
Once onboard, the patient was settled comfortably and closely monitored throughout the flight. Beyond the clinical checks, our medic explained each stage of the process, answered questions and offered reassurance to the family. The patient’s family later shared that it was the most peaceful they had seen him in weeks. For our team, providing that sense of calm and security was just as important as delivering the medical care itself.
The final stage of the journey proved to be the most moving of all. Upon arrival in Boston, our medic accompanied the patient and family all the way to their home address. There, an entire community had gathered to welcome him home. Friends, neighbours and former students lined the street to show their love and respect, while the local fire service waited to carry him inside. It was an emotional and unforgettable moment that captured the true purpose of what we do.
This mission was a powerful reminder that medical repatriation is about more than moving patients from one place to another. It is about teamwork, determination and compassion working together to make the impossible possible. At AD Medical, a challenge is never met with defeat. No stone is left unturned until a solution is found, and we will always go the extra mile to make sure our patients can return to where they belong safely, with dignity and surrounded by love.
