Dr Hope Ang, Medical Director at Red Dot Air Ambulance, talks to ITIJ about retaining staff, the importance of accreditation, and the challenges of cross-border transfers
What do you find to be the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role as Medical Director of Red Dot Air Ambulance?
In order to ensure mission success, it is critical to understand intimately the unique medical requirements of the patient. Our team conducts a comprehensive assessment of every patient’s medical needs by reviewing all medical reports, laboratory tests, radiological investigations, and speaking to medical personnel on the ground if required; this can be challenging when navigating crossborder, across language barriers and time zones in our wide area of operations. The best reward is when I see our missions proceed smoothly and our patients arrive safely at their destination. The positive feedback I receive from the patients and their families further validates the professionalism and dedication of our entire team.
Your air ambulance teams have over 20 years of urgent critical care experience. How do you recruit and retain great medical staff?
We prioritise expertise and adaptability. Recruitment focuses on clinicians with proven experience in critical care, emergency medicine, who thrive in high-pressure environments. Retention is fostered through continuous professional development, including training.

EURAMI accreditation is a gold standard, validating compliance with rigorous safety, clinical, and operational benchmarks. The process evaluated our aircraft, medical protocols, crew training, and patient outcomes. Achieving these underscores our commitment to excellence, differentiating us in a competitive market. For clients, it assures trust – families and insurers know we meet globally recognised standards. Operationally, it drives continuous improvement, ensuring our practices align with evolving best practices. This accreditation also facilitates partnerships with international healthcare providers. Ultimately, it reinforces our reputation as a reliable, patient-centered service in critical moments.
You offer a huge range of services from bed-to-bed, critical care and paediatric on your aircraft. What are the challenges in caring for critical patients especially when crossing borders?
Cross-border transfers introduce multifaceted challenges. Every mission demands agility to navigate these variables while prioritising patient stability. Risks are unpredictable but are mitigated through meticulous pre-mission planning, partnering with local agencies for real-time logistics support, and crew briefing on cultural protocols and competencies.

Highly specialised medical escort crew including flight physicians and critical care nurses must be trained to handle emergencies in-flight without access to hospital-level backup and maintain continuity of care while adapting to differing regional medical protocols. Ensuring seamless communication with the patient-family especially during highstress situations and ensuring multilingual staff handoff protocols is key.

Dr Ang is an experienced Consultant Anaesthesiologist trained in critical care, aeromedical and maritime evacuation, and he was part of numerous search-and-rescue missions in his career, leading both operational planning and on-site execution of medical evacuation. He is also a Singapore Armed Forces Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Specialist.
