Making a meaningful impact
Monica Rummelhoff, Executive Director at GMMI, talks to ITIJ about accreditation, new tech in cost containment, and what’s next for the business
Accreditation is becoming increasingly vital for businesses
such as GMMI. Can you tell us why it’s so important, and what the business does to gain and retain accreditation?
Accreditation is critical for us because it establishes a benchmark of trust, quality, and reliability in our services. At GMMI, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards, which is why we have secured and retained multiple key accreditations. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified, which speaks of our commitment to continuous improvement and quality management. Additionally, our ISO 27001:2013 accreditation ensures that we meet stringent requirements for information security – critical in protecting sensitive data. Moreover,
we are URAC accredited for our Health Utilization Management Program, which further reflects our dedication to ensuring quality care while managing costs effectively.
These accreditations aren't just badges of honour; they are integral to how we operate. We go through regular audits and assessments to ensure that we not only meet but exceed the
standards set by these certifications. This dedication helps us build and retain the trust of our clients, ensuring we provide services that are both reliable and compliant with the highest
industry standards.
Is GMMI using technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) to help with cost containment, and if so, what are the results?
We are actively exploring AI to enhance our cost containment strategies. While generative AI (Gen AI) is a newer trend, it's important to highlight that we already have robust robotic process automation (RPA) with fraud, waste, and abuse detection flags in place as part of our cost-containment operations. These technologies have been instrumental
in streamlining processes and identifying discrepancies, allowing us to efficiently manage costs while ensuring high-quality care.

As for AI, we are in the early stages of identifying areas where it can make a meaningful impact, such as improving operational
efficiencies and enhancing service delivery. However, as we move forward, we want to ensure that we remain true to our human-centric approach. Our 'We Care' philosophy emphasises
being caring, available, reliable, and easy to work with, and we believe that any technology we adopt should align with these values.
The GMMI team attends all the ITIC events. Can you explain why these conferences are so important for
the business?
The ITIC events are vital to our business for several reasons. Firstly, they provide an excellent platform for us to stay updated on the latest trends, challenges, and innovations in the industry. Attending these events allows us to engage with other leaders in the field, share insights, and learn from the experiences of our peers.
Secondly, these conferences offer unparalleled networking opportunities. By engaging with key stakeholders, clients, and
partners, we can strengthen relationships and explore new business opportunities. ITIC events also allow us to showcase our thought leadership and our pioneering role in the cost
containment space, further solidifying our position as industry leaders.
What’s next for GMMI?
Innovation and customer experience are at the heart of our future. We constantly review customer feedback to drive improvement projects across all aspects of our business.
Innovation allows us to enhance efficiencies while ensuring the quality of our services remains top-notch.
As the pioneers of medical cost containment in the US, we have been leading the industry for over 32 years. Our innovative streak includes being the first to offer an online portal where clients can access their members’ claim information with unprecedented transparency. Recently, we completely redesigned this portal, and now we’re focusing on elevating it further.
The next step for us is to transform the portal from a self-service, consultative tool to an interactive platform, where clients will have more control and engagement with their members' claims. This evolution reflects our dedication to innovation, driving us to continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible in medical cost containment.
