Introducing the Cairo Medevac Center
Dr Hany Sabry, CEO of Egypt Global Assistance, tells ITIJ about their new centre at Terminal 2, Cairo International Airport
Located strategically within Terminal 2 at Cairo International Airport, the Cairo Medevac Center stands as a regional hub for advanced medical evacuation and aeromedical transport services.
It is designed to provide rapid, world-class emergency medical response for travellers, expatriates, and patients in need of urgent transfer to specialised care facilities locally or internationally. The centre operates in collaboration with Cairo International Airport authorities, local hospitals, and global medical transport networks to ensure seamless and efficient evacuation operations.
Comprehensive medical evacuation capabilities
The Cairo Medevac Center is equipped to handle a wide spectrum of patient transfer scenarios, ranging from minor medical escorts to complex intensive care unit (ICU) air ambulance operations. The facility serves as a critical link between ground-based healthcare providers and international destinations, ensuring continuity of care throughout the journey. Its core services include:
1. Medical escort team
For patients stable enough to travel on commercial flights but still requiring medical oversight, the centre provides professional medical escort teams consisting of doctors, nurses and paramedics trained in inflight medicine. These teams accompany patients from hospital bed to final destination, managing medications, monitoring vital signs, and addressing any complications that may arise mid-flight. Escorts are equipped with essential medical gear, oxygen support, and emergency kits, ensuring comfort and safety throughout the journey.
2. ICU air ambulance
When a patient’s condition demands intensive care during transport, the Cairo Medevac Center can deploy ICU-configured air ambulances. These aircraft are outfitted with advanced life-support systems – including ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, and defibrillators – replicating the functionality of a hospital intensive care unit. Each mission is staffed by a specialised medical crew capable of delivering critical care from take off to landing.
3. Air ambulance with medical isolation unit
The centre also offers air ambulances equipped with medical isolation units, designed for infectious disease control and bio-containment transport. These units allow for the safe transfer of patients with contagious conditions while ensuring full protection for crew and medical staff. Such capabilities became essential during global health crises, positioning Cairo as a key evacuation point for the Middle East and Africa.
4. Stretcher on commercial aircraft
For patients who are stable but nonambulatory, the Cairo Medevac Center coordinates stretcher arrangements on commercial flights. Working closely with airlines, the team secures stretcher kits, privacy partitions, and any necessary medical equipment onboard. Ground handling at both departure and arrival airports is meticulously managed to maintain continuity of care and dignity for the patient.

Assistance and coordination 24/7
The Cairo Medevac Center’s 24/7 Assistance Centre acts as the operational heart of its services. When you contact the centre to request a medevac or mass evacuation, a team of trained professionals immediately assesses the medical condition or emergency scenario. They then design a bed-to-bed evacuation plan, covering every stage of the journey – from ground ambulance pickup and airport coordination to air transport and hospital admission at the destination. This integrated process ensures that patients receive uninterrupted care across all transport modes, whether ground, air, or sea.
