Interview: Agathi Kanellou, Medical Claims International
Agathi Kanellou, Managing Director of Medical Claims International, talks to Oliver Cuenca about the work of her company and its subsidiary, MCI Assist
What are the most significant changes you’ve noticed in the international assistance management and cost containment sector in recent years?
In recent years, the sector has seen significant changes due to the
increasing use of technology like telemedicine and advanced data analytics. These innovations have greatly improved the efficiency and effectiveness of managing international medical cases.
There’s also been a notable shift towards personalised and patient-
centric care, focusing more on quality and outcomes rather than just cost reduction. The global pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote work and digital communication, making it easier to coordinate complex cases across borders.
Additionally, artificial intelligence and machine learning are starting to
play crucial roles in predicting costs and managing claims more effectively.
What advantage does being a Spain-based company offer Medical Claims International and MCI Assist?
Spain offers several advantages for our industry. Its strategic location serves as a bridge between Europe, Latin America, and North Africa, facilitating efficient coordination and communication with diverse regions.
The country boasts a highly developed healthcare system with world-class facilities and professionals, which is essential for high-quality medical interventions and collaborations.
Spain’s competitive cost structure allows for more affordable healthcare services without compromising quality. The presence of multilingual professionals and a rich cultural heritage also makes Spain an attractive base for handling international clients and patients.

Are there any challenges to being based in Spain, and how do you overcome them?
While Spain offers many advantages, there are challenges such as navigating the diverse regulatory landscape across different countries when coordinating international medical assistance.
To overcome this, we invest in continuous education and training
for our staff to stay updated on international regulations and best practices. Language barriers can also pose a challenge, but we address this by employing multilingual staff and utilising translation services when necessary.
Additionally, the bureaucratic processes in Spain can sometimes be slow – however, building strong relationships with local authorities and healthcare providers helps expedite necessary procedures.
How is MCI looking to grow its operations in the future?
MCI is focused on expanding its operations through strategic partnerships and alliances with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and assistance networks worldwide.
We aim to enhance our global footprint by establishing regional offices in key markets to provide localised support and improve response times. Investing in cutting-edge technology and digital platforms is also a priority to streamline our operations and deliver more efficient and effective services.
Furthermore, we plan to diversify our service offerings by introducing specialised training programmes and workshops in medical repatriation and international assistance management.

What new technology or innovations are you looking to adopt in the future to improve MCI’s efficiency?
We are exploring the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance our cost prediction and claims management processes. These technologies will enable us to analyse vast amounts of data quickly and accurately, leading to more informed decision-making and cost savings
for our clients.

Additionally, we are investing in telemedicine platforms to facilitate remote consultations and second opinions, reducing the need for unnecessary travel and expediting care. Blockchain technology is another area of interest for secure and transparent data sharing among stakeholders.
We are also looking into advanced communication tools and project management software to improve coordination and collaboration within our teams and with external partners.
In your role as a cost containment specialist, how do you work with healthcare providers to ensure that patients get the best deal possible?
As a cost containment specialist, we work closely with healthcare
providers to negotiate favourable rates and ensure transparent billing practices. We conduct thorough market research and benchmarking to understand fair pricing for various medical services and procedures.
Our team regularly audits medical bills to identify discrepancies and
prevent overcharging. We also foster strong relationships with healthcare providers, emphasising the importance of quality care at reasonable costs.
By collaborating on case management and treatment plans, we ensure
that patients receive necessary and appropriate care without incurring excessive expenses.
Additionally, we advocate for preventive measures and early interventions to reduce long-term healthcare costs while maintaining high standards of patient care.
