Hong Kong skyline

Alysia Cameron-Davies highlights some of the city’s top attractions and dining spots so you can make the most of your trip to Hong Kong for ITIC APAC 2025

With its striking skyscraper skyline, breathtaking harbour views, and world-renowned food scene, Hong Kong is a vibrant city full of things to see, taste, and explore. ITIC APAC will be held at the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel within Kowloon’s bustling Tsim Sha Tsui East district. This area is brimming with shops, restaurants and bars.

Top attractions

The Kowloon Shangri-La is situated in a prime location. Step out the door and enjoy a stroll along Victoria Harbour’s waterfront promenade while taking in the stunning views of Hong Kong’s famous skyline. Within minutes, you will reach the Avenue of Stars which runs along the waterfront, where you can marvel at statues and handprints honouring Hong Kong movie legends like Bruce Lee.

The promenade is also an ideal spot to watch the Symphony of Lights show – a captivating display of laser beams and music that takes place every evening at 8pm.

From the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier you can take the historic Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour to central Hong Kong. Operating since 1888, this iconic passenger service connects Kowloon with Hong Kong Island, where you will find the districts of Central, Western, Eastern, Southern, and Wan Chai. The ferry is a scenic and practical way to travel between the two sides of the city.

If you’re craving a moment of tranquillity, Nan Lian Garden offers a serene escape in the heart of Diamond Hill, Kowloon. Spanning over 3.5 hectares, this classical Chinese garden is designed in the style of the Tang Dynasty.

Victoria Peak is one of Hong Kong’s must-see attractions. Standing at 552 metres (1,811 feet) above sea level, it’s the highest point on Hong Kong Island, offering breathtaking views of the skyscraper landscape, Victoria Harbour, and surrounding islands.

Another unique site is the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in Sha Tin. Climb over 400 steps lined with golden Buddha statues, each with a distinct expression, to reach the temple complex at the top. Explore five temples, four pavilions, a nine-story pagoda, and a main hall adorned with thousands of miniature Buddhas, contributing to the monastery’s total of almost 13,000 statues.

The Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha, is located further afield in Ngong Ping on Lantau Island. This monumental bronze statue is one of the largest seated outdoor Buddhas in the world. The most scenic way to reach it is via the Ngong Ping 360 cable car from Tung Chung. This 25-minute ride offers sweeping views of the mountains, coastline, and South China Sea.

Where to dine

Hong Kong is a food-lover’s paradise, offering everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to street food stalls. You’ll be spoiled for choice in Tsim Sha Tsui, home to a wide variety of international and local dining options.

A standout Cantonese fine-dining option is Above & Beyond, located on the 28th floor of Hotel ICON, offering panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. Signature dishes include dim sum, rice rolls, dumplings, and seafood. For a more casual dim sum experience, One Dim Sum is a popular spot in Kowloon.

Avenue of Stars is also a fantastic dining spot with an abundance of restaurants boasting beautiful harbour views. Another highlight in Kowloon is the Temple Street Night Market. Located in the areas of Jordan and Yau Ma Tei, this is one of Hong Kong’s most famous street markets. Every evening this bustling hub comes alive with food stalls, shopping and entertainment.

You’ll be spoiled for choice in Tsim Sha Tsui, home to a wide variety of international and local dining options.

In the Central district, Mott 32 is a celebrated Chinese restaurant named after New York’s first Chinese convenience store at 32 Mott Street. With multiple global locations, it’s renowned for its delicious Cantonese cuisine, striking Joyce Wang-designed interior and recognition on the 50 Best Discovery list. Signature dishes include the barbecue Ibérico pork, 42-day apple wood roasted Peking duck, and lobster fried rice.

Another top choice in Central is Feuille, a fine-dining restaurant led by acclaimed French chef David Toutain. It holds both a Michelin star and a Green Star for its creative, sustainability-focused cuisine. Amber, located on the seventh floor of the Landmark Mandarin Oriental, is another standout with three Michelin stars and a Green Star. Both offer exceptional vegetarian and vegan options.

While in the central district, check out Peel Street, another trendy hotspot that comes alive at night and has an abundance of dining options.

Local specialities worth trying include claypot rice – a classic Hong Kong dish made with rice and toppings like Chinese sausage or chicken, cooked in a clay pot to create a crispy, smoky bottom layer. This comforting meal is especially popular during the cooler months.

Another local favourite is the pineapple bun (bolo bao). Despite the name, it contains no pineapple – just a soft, sweet bun topped with a golden, crumbly crust resembling a pineapple. Served warm and sometimes filled with butter, it’s an indulgent treat found in bakeries and cafés across the city. Popular bakeries near the Kowloon Shangri-La include Bakehouse and Hashtag B.

Bars

Just around the corner from the Kowloon Shangri-La is Avoca. This stylish cocktail bar is located on the 38th floor of the Mondrian Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui and offers stunning views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island. The bar is renowned for its innovative cocktails inspired by local flavours, such as the Clay Pot Negroni and the Sesame and Peanut Butter Sour. Nearby, Qura Bar at the Regent Hong Kong is right on the waterfront and offers an impressive wine list alongside rare spirits. For more spectacular views, Aqua is another popular rooftop favourite. Or, for the ultimate experience, visit Ozone on the 118th floor of the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong – the world’s highest rooftop bar.
