Dr Stephan Klose, Medical Director at AMTRAS aeromed, explains how the German medical escort provider saves time and costs with its own integrated medical travel agency

AMTRAS (Air Medical Transport Solutions) understands that safe and reliable air medical transport requires time for precise planning and detailed coordination. At the same time, hospital bills are rising, and patients want to get home as soon as possible. But does faster service necessarily mean higher costs? Not with an integrated approach. AMTRAS, based in Germany, provides medical escort services on commercial flights, combining rapid response with cost efficiency by integrating a dedicated in-house medical travel agency into its daily operations. Here’s a real-world example that demonstrates the benefits of this solution.

Case study: global patient transport with unmatched efficiency

Recently, a major medical and travel assistance company requested quotes from its partner providers to transport a 67-year-old man recovering from a heart attack, from Auckland, New Zealand to New York, US. Despite the distance between the home base and the transport route, the AMTRAS operations team quickly sent out a quote and received confirmation by 17:40. The medical escort was airborne from Frankfurt, Germany, en route to New Zealand by 20:40 the same day. Thanks to its in-house travel agency, AMTRAS immediately secured the necessary seats, while the medical director's thorough medical assessment ensured that the patient met all International Air Transport Association (IATA) medical requirements. This allowed for quick medical approval by the airline.

Within 30 hours of receiving transport confirmation, the patient underwent a pre-flight assessment by the Medical Escort Doctor at the Auckland hospital. The following day, the patient was seamlessly transported on a one-stop, lay-flat business class flight via Los Angeles. Seventy-two hours after the initial request, the patient was safely delivered to his cardiologist in New York.

Our solution: expertise in fare combinations, airline knowledge, smart ticketing and access to non-public fares enable AMTRAS aeromed to provide fast, highly competitive transport solutions – even over large geographical distances.

Leverage resources for cost savings

While this transport was underway, AMTRAS aeromed received another request to transport a 78-year-old woman with a hip fracture and pulmonary embolism from Washington, DC to London, UK. With our medical escort already en route to Europe and equipped with AMTRAS standard medical equipment – including oxygen and a heart monitor – the operations team offered a highly competitive quote by rebooking the escort's flight home via Washington and London.

With a short flight from New York to Washington, the patient was evaluated at her rehabilitation facility within 24 hours of the request. Using direct access to global distribution systems (GDS) for ticket reservations, the operations team secured seats on the next available non-stop flight to London.

After a necessary rest period in Washington, the medical escort safely transported the patient to her home in London, where she was warmly welcomed by her relieved family.

In the end, our medical escort completed two consecutive patient transports – one transpacific and one transatlantic – and returned to Frankfurt, concluding a successful six-day mission.

Our solution: empty-leg flight options aren't limited to air ambulances. By leveraging required commercial positioning flights and the ability to add free stopovers or rerouting options at minimal cost, we provide significant cost savings for empty-leg solutions in commercial medical escort missions.

The benefits of an integrated approach

The fact that all aspects of commercial medical escort operations are handled by a single, integrated desk at AMTRAS aeromed, ensures quick quotes, fast response times and transportation options regardless of the location of the patient or medical escort. AMTRAS can provide real-time access to seat and fare availability to ensure efficient and reliable air medical transportation.

AMTRAS aeromed, based in Frankfurt, Germany – the Heart of Europe – specialises in providing worldwide commercial medical escort services by combining medical expertise with dedicated travel agency capabilities. With a focus on physician-led care, AMTRAS ensures fast and reliable air medical transportation for patients of any age or complexity on commercial airlines worldwide.
