Hospital da Luz network: proximity and cooperation

Luz Saúde’s ambitious expansion strategy for the Hospital da Luz network will reach 90% of the Portuguese population in the next few years

Luz Saúde has recently grown to 31 healthcare facilities including general hospitals, multispecialty ambulatory clinics, and a rehabilitation hospital. The company is swiftly expanding to reach additional underserved areas as well as reinforce its presence in urban areas. “We expect to grow to 45 healthcare units in the next few years, solidifying the group as the largest healthcare network covering most of Portugal,” said Tomas B Fonseca, COO of Luz Saúde.

Luz Saúde looks at the country by region and is working to have a hospital with various satellite clinics in each

Luz Saúde uses a hub-and-spoke model to develop its network, wellsuited to Portugal’s population distribution, which is concentrated in major coastal regions like Lisbon, Porto, and Setúbal, with smaller populations in the interior.

This integrated care model across local units ensures easy access to preventive and general services, while providing a coordinated, comprehensive response when specialised care is needed. Complex, specialised services are concentrated in highpopulation areas to ensure sufficient demand, justify advanced technology, and attract the most experienced physicians.

With 25 years of experience building its network, Luz Saúde follows a proven model for integrating new units. This approach is supported by advanced IT systems, adaptable infrastructure and design, security protocols, and efficient maintenance solutions. Each new facility is rapidly integrated into Luz Saúde’s existing digital ecosystem, including administrative and clinical platforms, billing systems, and patientfacing tools such as the My Luz app, the Luz24 nurse triage line, and video consultations for both urgent and scheduled care.

The continued growth of Hospital da Luz’s network

Algarve: Luz Saúde will arrive in the Algarve during 2025 through the acquisition of the majority stake in the Hospital de Loulé group. Algarve clients can now access care locally, with support for coordination if specialised treatment is needed in Lisbon. Luz Saúde has acquired six units in the Algarve, located between Vilamoura and Tavira, including a hospital in Loulé and five clinics, located in Tavira, Almancil, Vilamoura, Olhão, and Loulé.

South of Lisbon and the River Tejo: The construction of a new hospital on the south side of the River Tejo, in Seixal, is a priority due to the high population density and the lack of providers. Backed by an investment of over €50 million, the new hospital will provide a full range of services, including surgery, inpatient care, imaging, lab tests, emergency care, and specialist consultations. Luz Saúde expects the new hospital to be completed within three years, with a capacity of 42 beds, and 400 jobs created.

North of Lisbon: Opened earlier this year, Hospital da Luz Clínica de Vila Franca de Xira represents an investment of over €15 million and operates in coordination with Hospital da Luz Lisboa. Luz Saúde has also recently launched new clinics in Covilhã and Figueira da Foz. In the second quarter of 2025, Hospital da Luz Clínica de Leiria and a third clinic in the Aveiro region will open. Looking ahead to 2026, Santarém will see the addition of a new hospital: Hospital da Luz Ribatejo.

Madeira: In Funchal, the new Hospital da Luz Clínica da Carreira was strategically located downtown, joining Hospital da Luz Clínica do Caniço in working closely with Hospital da Luz Funchal. Together, they offer a broader range of services and a stronger outpatient presence, supported by hospital-level care and continuity in medical and surgical treatment. For highly complex cases, Hospital da Luz Funchal also connects with the infrastructure and specialists at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, as part of the integrated care network.

“All the new units in Luz Saúde will additionally benefit from our international patient support that exists across the group. These new hospitals and clinics will be available to many of the international insurers and assistance companies we work with. In addition to serving the Portuguese population, we are looking forward to being one of the anchors that helps new residents settle and visitors find the care they need, wherever they are,” said Eve Jokel, International Patient Services Director at Luz Saúde.

Eve Jokel has served as International Director at Luz Saúde for over 16 years. Before joining Luz Saúde, she gained experience in various healthcare sectors, including pharmaceuticals, health insurance, and basic research. Eve holds a BSc in Neuroscience and an MPH in Health Services Management and Policy, both from UCLA.

Luz Saúde, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is one of the largest healthcare groups in Portugal. It operates a total of 32 units within the Hospital da Luz network, including general hospitals, multispecialty outpatient clinics, one rehabilitation hospital, and a senior assisted living residence. Offering a full range of medical and surgical specialties, Hospital da Luz units organise services primarily around specific pathologies to provide patients with comprehensive and integrated care.
