Carlos Fernandez, CEO at Big Tree Services, talks to ITIJ about cost containment, risk management, and the importance of good supplier relationships

Big Tree Services specialises in cost containment. Can you tell us about the challenges the business faces when it comes to cost containment, and how you overcome those obstacles?

One of the obstacles is the exchange rate in many countries. Providers in countries like Argentina are being paid from our local office but this practice is not what we usually do because our financial headquarters are based in the US, and our protocols demand these invoices be paid through wires. Also, there are many agreements that need to be paid on the spot to get the best possible rate. In these cases, we give enough authority to all our supervisors to submit the payments right away to avoid delays from our providers. Our priority is to keep our global network healthy and ready to act when our customers need us.

Risk management is an important part of the business. How do you work with partners and providers around the world to reduce risk exposure and help customers?

Our operations team are close to our providers. Confidence and reliability are two important principles that make our commercial relationships very strong and help us to solve anything that may arise with no doubts in terms of service or financial obligations. Every case handler or direct provider engaged in a contract with us is honoured not only with the corresponding payment of our duties, but also with human sense, that guarantee a good future for both parties.

What new technology is Big Tree Services using to help the business?

Terrawind Medical Scanner (TMS) is a new system that allows our medical staff to have more information from the patient through plethysmography, a digital tool that works through cell phones and scans different vital signals from the client every minute. This tool is key for the doctors to know the health status of the client and helps them to make quick decisions that may save many lives.

Our suppliers are chosen according to their reliability, which we have gleaned after more than 37 years of experience

You work with an international network of more than 65,000 suppliers in different specialties. Can you tell us how you chose those suppliers and how important those relationships are?

Our suppliers are chosen according to their reliability, which we have gleaned after more than 37 years of experience. We’ve handled more than 100,000 cases per year during all this time and know the best people in the industry. Good and bad practices are well known, and we only work with the best professionals. Many newcomers contact us, but we prefer to keep extraordinary relationships with the ones that we know, instead of accepting business from others that don’t guarantee to honour our sales promise. Our reputation is not negotiable, so our partners are always for us when we need them the most.

What’s next for Big Tree Services?

The expansion of our operations to service producers from other parts of the world is key. Asia is already a reality where we have partners that are bringing a good level of premiums and cases. Europe is coming very soon, and we are setting up everything to be ready. Also, technology is changing every day, and artificial intelligence (AI) is a trend that we can’t avoid anymore. Our staff of developers are working very hard to update our service platforms to help us provide an even faster service. Finally, our operations staff numbers are growing quickly, and our recruiting, selection and training team is larger and stronger every day. The future looks good and we are ready for it.

This month we examine whether insurers are making the best use of social media to target a new audience. We look at what’s been done, and what more could be done to educate a new generation. We also look at the rise in multi-generational holidays – are insurers able to tailor policies to fit this trend?
