GMMI – their meticulous service saved a life
GMMI tells ITIJ of a recent case where they successfully repatriated a very ill client to Australia
At GMMI we deal with complex medical cases day in and day out. Our team of dedicated and caring professionals is always ready to take swift and effective action, following our mission “to bring our clients’ members from distress to relief. Anytime, anywhere.” This commitment was exemplified in a recent case where we coordinated the care and repatriation of a member suffering from a rare and severe neurological condition while vacationing in the southwestern US.
Context
While vacationing in the southwestern US, one of our clients’ members experienced a sudden and severe medical crisis. The member developed symptoms including ataxia – characterised by loss of coordination, difficulty walking, and limb weakness – alongside ophthalmoplegia, a paralysis of the eye muscles, and significant confusion, impairing their ability to think clearly. These alarming symptoms led to the member’s hospitalisation and a diagnosis of Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis.
Services provided
Upon admission, the member was swiftly referred to an appropriate medical facility within our preferred network equipped to handle such a complex condition. Initially, the member underwent plasmapheresis treatment for 10 days. Although the member responded well at first, their condition plateaued, and the member began experiencing hallucinations. The member’s treatment regimen also included high-dose steroids, which contributed to the complexity of their symptoms.
The coordination involved
in arranging this air ambulance
transfer was meticulous,
ensuring that all medical
and logistical aspects
were addressed
As the member’s neurologic state continued to decline, they required transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). Over nearly a month of treatment, the member showed signs of progress and was considered for transfer to an inpatient rehabilitation unit. However, the member’s mobility significantly declined, and they exhibited poor judgement and aggressive, erratic behaviour due to the hallucinations. This necessitated a reconsideration of the member’s repatriation options.
Actions taken
Given the member’s volatile behaviour, repatriation via commercial flight posed a potential threat to other passengers. Consequently, an air ambulance was deemed the most appropriate solution to ensure the member’s safe return to Australia. The coordination involved in arranging this air ambulance transfer was meticulous, ensuring that all medical and logistical aspects were addressed.
Final outcome
The member was safely transported back to Australia, where they continued their rehabilitation in a familiar environment. The member’s prognosis is favourable, with doctors estimating a full recovery within six months. The billed charges for the member’s 40-day hospital stay amounted to just under US$500,000, but through effective claim management, our teams achieved over 50% savings, reflecting our commitment to cost efficiency without compromising the quality of care.
Appreciation and impact
The member’s family, who accompanied them during this ordeal, expressed profound gratitude for the exemplary coordination of services. They commended the seamless collaboration between the medical facilities, our insurance company, the air evacuation vendor, and all the teams involved.
This case underscores the critical importance of coordinated medical assistance and financial management in navigating complex medical emergencies. The successful outcome not only highlights the efficiency of our services but also the compassion and dedication of our team in ensuring the best possible care for our clients’ members, even under the most challenging circumstances.
