Evacuating and rehabilitating an accident survivor
Egypt Assistance recounts the journey of a Yemeni citizen who fell victim to a mine explosion, and whose intricate medical needs were successfully addressed through the work of the company’s medical professionals and service providers.
In the challenging landscape of humanitarian healthcare, organisations often face intricate cases requiring seamless coordination and a spectrum of services. A company overseas reached out to us, seeking assistance for a Yemeni citizen involved in a severe accident.
The patient had been initially transferred to a hospital in Aden, Yemen, where it became apparent that the technical and medical expertise required for his case exceeded local capabilities. The decision was made to evacuate the patient to Egypt for specialised treatment.
Initial assessment and planning
Communication hurdles due to the lack of medical reports were overcome through detailed telephone conversations between our medical director and the treating doctor in Aden.
The patient’s complex injuries included traumatic eye injuries; bilateral upper limb amputations; colon trauma; and fractures in the lower limbs. An air ambulance was deemed necessary for his safe transportation to Egypt.
Execution of evacuation
Our team coordinated with air ambulance service providers to secure safe and competitive transportation. The patient was received at Cairo Airport and transported from the runway to a private hospital using ALS (advanced life support) ground ambulance services.
The entry procedures were facilitated through a special service provided by the airport authorities, ensuring a smooth transition for the patient and a companion from his family.
Medical interventions
Upon arrival at the private hospital, the patient underwent a series of medical tests and evaluations. Multiple surgeries were performed to address the traumatic injuries, including eye surgeries, amputation site dressing, and colostomy reversal. The patient’s recovery period involved ground ambulance transfers to a specialised eye hospital for further treatment.
Prosthetic limb rehabilitation
Collaborating with a private prosthetics company, we facilitated multiple visits to measure and manufacture suitable prosthetic limbs for the patient’s comfort. A specialised trainer from the prosthetics company was engaged to train the patient on the safe and effective use of the prosthetics.
Psychological support
Acknowledging the significance of mental wellbeing, the medical team recognised the importance of providing support through an independent psychologist who does not belong to any medical facility. This specialised psychiatrist was deployed to help the patient accept and adjust to their new condition. Regular sessions were conducted in the hospital and at the patient’s post-discharge residence.
Multiple surgeries were performed, including eye surgeries and amputation site dressing
Holistic support
To ensure a holistic approach, the patient and a relative were provided with a suitable hotel apartment close to the hospital. This arrangement facilitated easy ground ambulance and taxi transfers for medical follow-ups and surgeries.
This case exemplifies the power of collaboration and adaptability in addressing complex medical situations. Leveraging the company’s versatile capabilities, we organised air ambulance services, worked closely with authorities at the airport, facilitated ALS and basic life support (BLS) ground ambulance transportation, and ensured access to private surgical and eyespecialised hospitals.
Furthermore, our industrial expertise extends to the manufacturing of prosthetic limbs, showcasing our commitment to enhancing lives beyond immediate medical care. In addition, our services encompass psychological support and treatment, reinforcing our dedication to addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of wellbeing. To ensure a seamless experience, we assist with hotel and transfer reservations, further underlining our commitment to comprehensive, patient-centred care.
The successful evacuation, comprehensive medical interventions, and ongoing support demonstrate our organisation’s commitment to providing holistic care to those in need, fostering resilience and hope in adversity.
