Embracing technology to save lives

The company started out as a pre-hospital care service provider but has evolved substantially. Can you tell us what services you now offer?

Holistic Care Medical Assistance was founded in response to a pressing need: the lack of structured emergency medical services across sub-Saharan Africa. We understood early on that timely pre-hospital care could mean the difference between life and death – and we set out to be that difference.

Over the years, our scope has grown dramatically. Today, we’re one of the largest providers of CPR, First Aid, and BLS training in the region. We’ve also become a leading supplier of medical disposables, while expanding our services to include off-shore and remote-site medical staffing, equipping mining and oil firms with trained medics. In addition, we operate commercial medical escort services and air ambulance transfers across the continent, ensuring patients get the care they need, wherever they are. Our medical assistance arm also provides payment guarantees, facilitates diagnostics, and connects patients with hospitals across Africa. It’s been an incredible evolution – and we’re just getting started.

You have been with Holistic Care Medical Assistance for over 12 years. What does your role involve and what are the biggest challenges you face?

As Managing Director, I wear many hats – strategist, network builder, crisis manager, and visionary. My primary focus is growth: expanding into new African markets, identifying underserved regions, and finding innovative ways to deliver healthcare where it’s needed most. But with great ambition comes great challenges. We're up against deep-rooted issues: language barriers, fragile infrastructure, and widespread poverty. Recent political instability – including military takeovers in some Francophone nations – has added a layer of complexity, especially in regions where we were scaling operations. Still, each challenge fuels our resolve. We’re not just building a company – we’re building a legacy of accessible healthcare in Africa.

You cover a vast area in Sub-Saharan Africa. How difficult is it to operate across such a large area? And is there any tech, such as telemedicine, which you utilise?

It’s a mammoth task – imagine trying to coordinate life-saving services across 24.3 million square kilometers, often in terrain with no roads and minimal infrastructure. Connectivity is one of our biggest hurdles. In some areas, there’s little to no mobile network coverage, making it tough to stay in touch with teams deployed deep in the field. We’ve also had to navigate security threats – there have been times we had to deploy armed escorts with our ambulances due to sectarian violence. In some tragic instances, our assets were destroyed. But even in these challenging environments, our mission remains clear.

Technology is a game-changer here. We’re investing heavily in mobile-based telemedicine solutions to reach those cut off from care. It’s not a silver bullet, but it’s a powerful tool that allows us to extend our reach and offer consultations in even the most isolated communities.

Partnerships are very important in this industry. How do you choose who to work with, and how do you help each other?

Our approach to partnerships is rooted in purpose. We seek out collaborators who share our deep commitment to excellence, compassion, and innovation in healthcare. We’re not just looking for transactions – we’re building relationships that have the power to transform lives. Every potential partner goes through a thorough vetting process. Our clinical governance team ensures that standards are aligned and that we’re creating synergy, not just supply chains. The result? Partnerships that strengthen our capabilities and extend our reach, all while keeping patients at the centre.

What’s next for Holistic Care Medical Assistance?

In a word: technology. Africa is on the cusp of a digital healthcare revolution, and we intend to be at the forefront of it. Our future lies in smart, scalable solutions – mobile telemedicine platforms, remote diagnostics, and digital health education that empowers individuals and communities. We’ve already launched pilot programme in West Africa, and over the next five years we’re expanding our occupational health clinics and telemedicine networks across the region. Our dream is to see a continent where no one is too remote to access care, and where every African has the opportunity to live a healthier, longer life.
