Delivering critical care across borders
Redstar Aviation tells ITIJ about their first successful air ambulance mission from Damascus
Redstar Aviation, a global provider of medical evacuation and air ambulance services, recently conducted its first mission from Damascus, Syria – an operation that highlights the company’s operational agility, medical excellence, and commitment to patient care even in the most challenging environments.
The mission
Upon receiving mission confirmation from the client on 2 June, Redstar Aviation promptly initiated the necessary insurance approval procedures. Following the successful completion of the insurance process on 5 June, all required authorisations were secured from the respective civil aviation authorities.
Thanks to its in-house flight operations and medical coordination teams, Redstar Aviation ensured that all regulatory permissions and logistical arrangements – including ground handling, overflight permits, and airport coordination – were finalised in time to execute the mission without delay. The operation was conducted on 6 June using a Bombardier Challenger 605 – an aircraft renowned for its long-range capabilities and medical configuration optimised for critical care transport.
The patient
Operating in a region with limited medical infrastructure, Redstar Aviation managed not only the aerial evacuation but also coordinated the patient’s ground transfer from the local hospital in Damascus to the airport. The patient, a 78-year-old male who had suffered an acute ischemic stroke, was initially treated by local healthcare providers. Given the complexity of his condition and the urgency of the transfer, Redstar Aviation deployed an experienced medical team to the region.

The flight
Despite the field limitations, the patient was stabilised and transferred to the fully equipped aircraft. During the flight, the patient’s neurological status and vital signs were continuously monitored using advanced onboard equipment. The medical team provided in-flight care tailored to the patient’s condition, ensuring his safety and comfort throughout the journey.
The treatment
Upon arrival in Istanbul, the patient was safely handed over to another accredited air ambulance provider in a coordinated wing-to-wing transfer for further diagnostics and treatment.
This milestone operation stands as a testament to Redstar Aviation’s capacity to execute high-complexity medical missions in conflict zones and underserved regions. With a fleet of nine dedicated air ambulance aircraft – including four Bombardier Challenger 605s and five Bombardier Learjet 45 XRs – Redstar continues to serve every continent with unwavering dedication to patient safety, medical excellence, and logistical precision.
