A complicated repatriation from Lagos to Warsaw
Managing Director Musa Gürçay from Medjet recounts a repatriation from Nigeria to Poland
Medjet provides stretcher booking services for Turkish Airlines along with many other airlines. Here we recount how our team completed another successful mission from Lagos, Nigeria to Warsaw, Poland.
The challenge
Our alarm centre took a call about a repatriation case from a client in Africa. The patient had anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, which was compressing the trachea causing airway obstruction. The treating doctor decided to repatriate the patient to a better medical facility in Poland.

As an accredited travel agency to Turkish Airlines, our team made the necessary bookings with them and issued tickets for the patient and our escorts. However, there were operational problems regarding ambulift at the airport because there was no available elevator in Lagos Airport. Our team decided to move the patient from the normal entrance with a wheelchair after discussing it with the Turkish Airlines authorities.
Coordinating the flights
Our team coordinated the flight with Turkish Airlines and the patient was able to gain access to the wheelchair from the front gate of the aircraft. Our team also organised an ambulance and a clinical rest at Istanbul Airport because the flight was connecting there. This meant that the patient and our medical escort could have a necessary rest while awaiting their next flight to Warsaw in Poland. The Medjet team completed another successful medical repatriation, even though there were serious problems such as elevator and plane access.
