Collaboration and careful coordination

Early in the morning, AirLink’s operations team was called upon to assist with a complex psychiatric case in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. This situation was more than just a medical air evacuation; it involved navigating legal uncertainties, addressing psychological resistance and ensuring close collaboration with all stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions. The operation highlighted AirLink's local expertise, compassionate care and leadership in coordinating efforts across various parties.

Context and background

A female patient with psychiatric symptoms, including delusional beliefs, had been arrested following a civil dispute that escalated into a detention. AirLink was asked to repatriate her back to Canada, despite the challenging legal, logistical and medical conditions. The first attempt to transport her failed as the patient remained uncooperative and in custody. The AirLink team’s first step was to help to solve all the issues to make the mission possible.

Coordination with authorities and local support

To fully understand the legal context, AirLink’s ops team reached out to its extensive network in Mexico and finally contacted a key person at the Puerto Peñasco prison where the patient was held. They were able to gather valuable information from the treating physician regarding the patient’s emotional and verbal state while in custody. Throughout this process, AirLink’s Flight Physician Dr Cortés managed the case from a medical perspective. Due to the patient’s psychiatric condition, transfer would only be possible if she was sedated, but the patient was strongly resistant to any form of medical intervention.

After numerous phone calls with AirLink’s local contact in Puerto Peñasco and legal adviser, it soon became clear that if the case were to escalate to a federal level, the process would become even more complicated. With this in mind, the AirLink team had to act fast to resolve the situation before the patient was released without a clear direction, potentially becoming lost or getting involved in further difficulties due to her psychiatric condition. There was also the risk of losing track of her altogether.

AirLink decided that intervention would only be possible if a family member or local representative could emotionally support and assist the patient locally in Puerto Peñasco.

Family involvement and second activation

Although the patient initially refused to see her family, one of her relatives travelled to Mexico and, with careful effort, established contact. Thanks to Dr Cortés’ medical intervention, the empathetic approach from the family, and the full support of the AirLink team, the patient eventually agreed to treatment and consented to the transfer back to Canada. Once AirLink received the green light, the team immediately began flight planning and worked with the client on securing admission in Canada.

At the time of activation, AirLink didn’t have an available aircraft. The ops team, however, quickly reassigned a less critical case, repositioning an aircraft, and took off without delay. Meanwhile, AirLink also provided guidance on settling outstanding bills and resolving all legal matters before the patient left Mexico.

Successful outcome and positive feedback

After the mission was successfully completed, AirLink received numerous thank-you notes, compliments, and positive feedback from the patient’s family and the client in Canada. This case is an example of the power of collaboration where the client, family members, medical professionals, local authorities and AirLink’s dedicated team came together to ensure a safe and efficient evacuation.
