Effie Giatraki, Head of Digital Transformation at MCI Group, tells ITIJ that through the MCI Academy, MCI Group is transforming three decades of operational experience into structured, accessible training

International medical assistance depends on professionals capable of making rapid, high-stakes decisions, coordinating across borders and delivering care in highly complex environments. Yet the sector continues to face a structural challenge: many new employees enter without formal preparation for case management, medical coordination or the intensity of 24/7 assistance services.

This challenge became even more evident with the recent expansion of MCI Group in Latin America and the creation of MCI Latam. As the organisation grew, so did the need to ensure that new teams could be trained consistently, efficiently and to the same operational standard across regions.

The launch

Launched externally in February 2026, the Academy builds on more than 30 years of MCI Group’s operational experience and many years of internal digital learning development. Originally designed as an internal learning management system (LMS) to train employees, supervisors and operational leaders, the system provided a tested foundation of real case-based knowledge before being opened to external professionals.

More than a training platform, MCI Academy turns onboarding into a competitive advantage: reducing training costs, accelerating productivity, relieving supervisors and delivering consistent knowledge across every operational team globally.

The next phase of development will expand into cost containment, provider network management, travel risk, VIP assistance and digital transformation

A feature of the Academy is its pedagogical approach, based on several key principles.

The Academy combines flexible online access with practical, case-based learning. Participants can study from anywhere, work through real scenarios in case management and cost containment, and use interactive tools to collaborate with peers. AI supports content development and personalised learning, while experienced instructors keep every course grounded in day-to-day international medical assistance.

The Academy relies on instructors with extensive experience in international medical assistance, ensuring that learning is grounded in real operational practice. Online delivery enables a wide variety of content formats and methodologies, helping overcome geographical and cost barriers while offering a rich, contextualised learning experience.

The courses

Advanced courses incorporate real operational materials, enabling students to work with scenarios that reflect actual industry complexity. Collaboration is actively encouraged through group tasks and live video conferences, while tutors provide continuous monitoring and feedback to support learner progression.

Flexibility is another cornerstone. Each course offers a structured yet adaptable learning path.

During its first months, the Academy delivered 14 accredited courses, trained 117 internal staff members and supported four organisations, including two assistance companies as institutional partners. Importantly, participation is also open to competitors, reflecting MCI’s commitment to raising industry-wide standards.

The curriculum spans four core areas: specialised medical training, prevention and first aid, international medical assistance operations, and nursing development. Topics include aeromedical transport, polytrauma, hyperbaric medicine, pharmacovigilance and global case coordination.

The next phase of development will expand into cost containment, provider network management, travel risk, VIP assistance and digital transformation, positioning the Academy as a comprehensive professional development platform.

For MCI Group, the Academy is a strategic investment in people and a scalable industry model that accelerates onboarding, reduces costs and builds consistent expertise. Year-long access enables employees to refresh their knowledge independently, strengthening team performance and service quality.

This month we take a close look at claims payments. As these payments become increasingly global, organisations are evaluating traditional international transfers, cryptocurrency, and parametric payment models to balance speed, cost, compliance, and customer experience.

While traditional banking systems remain trusted for reliability and regulatory certainty, they often fail to meet growing expectations for instant payments. Industry leaders increasingly favour hybrid payment ecosystems, combining established banking networks with modern digital technologies to deliver flexible, efficient, and customer-centric payment solutions. We hope the insights from our experts give you food for thought.
