Retrieving patients hundreds of kilometres from specialist facilities requires navigating unlit environments, restrictive night-flying infrastructure, unpredictable weather, and complex cross-border regulations. Flight crews routinely launch with minimal clinical context, stepping off the aircraft prepared to manage the full spectrum of high-acuity medical and traumatic emergencies.

Despite these severe operational challenges, HAC Medical’s unified team of pilots, dispatchers, Medical Directorate staff and flight medical clinicians, safely executed dozens of aeromedical missions over the past year, transporting critically ill patients while upholding rigorous European Aero-Medical Institute (EURAMI) accreditation standards.

Clinical investment and capabilities

Achieving this level of care in austere environments relies heavily on continuous investment in staff development. Because flight clinicians are often the highest level of medical authority a patient will see before reaching a hospital, HAC Medical’s teams completed extensive hours of structured clinical education over the last year, covering advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support, and aviation for healthcare providers.

To refine decision-making under intense pressure, the company established a dedicated simulation and training facility where multidisciplinary teams rehearse high-stress retrievals.

Furthermore, robust clinical governance led to lifesaving clinical upgrades, such as pre-hospital thrombolytic therapy protocols for acute myocardial infarction, which have already benefited time-critical cardiac patients in areas lacking specialist services.

HAC Medical also extended its expertise outward by delivering emergency response training to numerous external organisations, building resilient local emergency care networks across the continent.

Proof of concept

The lifesaving impact of this initiative was vividly demonstrated during a serious nighttime medical emergency at a remote safari lodge in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. With night-flying restricted, local responders trained under the emergency programme delivered continuous, high-level patient care under remote physician guidance until first light, when HAC Medical safely completed the aeromedical evacuation, resulting in a full recovery for all patients involved.
