Claudia Schmiedhuber, Founder and CEO of GAMTI, on the challenges of creating something new

Embarking on the journey of creating something new, whether it's a business venture, a project, or an innovative solution, is akin to mastering ‘the art of the start’. This phrase encapsulates the blend of vision, strategy, and resilience required to navigate the complexities of initiation and execution.

For me, it meant jumping into unknown water and trying to put together something that did not exist before – the first institute dedicated to educating the global medical assistance, medical transport and travel insurance industry.

What sounds like an exciting adventure – which it definitely is – also came with sleepless nights, countless Excel calculations on budget and capital, and even some moments of “screw that!”

So, why do it anyway? Like many entrepreneurs will tell you, there is a certain magic to starting something new. A sheer excitement when you watch it transform from a mere concept to something that exists and – the best part – you now have to pay taxes for!

While many will have stopped reading by now, for those who are still here (thanks for that!) I am happy to delve a bit more into
GAMTI’s journey and what I learned so far.

GAMTI is the first institute
that is dedicated to training and
educating our industry

When I had the idea for what is now GAMTI in 2018, I didn’t necessarily know how to start. From teaching on-site courses to fully digitalising it, the journey definitely had its hurdles and a lot of technical difficulties, that I much I can tell you. So – having the first students and corporates #GAMTICertified now, what have I learned so far?

Have a clear vision

What sounds easy is one of the most challenging aspects – knowing what, why and how you want to create. GAMTI is the
first institute that is dedicated to training and educating our industry – so my vision for it is clear: GAMTI will be the educational partner for all onboarding and continuous education for every company in our industry.

Sounds too far-fetched? Maybe, but I do believe that it will eventually come true.

Expect setbacks

Setbacks come in many shapes and forms. From technical bugs to overpriced add-ons to doubting potential customers, I certainly had my share of darker moments. However, each
setback also provided a learning curve for me, and it made me realise what I can do better – from making the courses easier to navigate to being more poignant in explaining what GAMTI
is all about.

I am sure the setbacks will continue as we grow, but I also do hope that they hold many more lessons for me and my team.

Understand your audience

This one was the most important lesson for me. Having been in the industry for 15+ years,I thought I knew how everything worked. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I had
no clue how different training and education were in companies around the world – even belonging to the same corporate group. The biggest take-away for me was to really listen
what my potential clients need, how they work and how I can adapt GAMTI to exactly what they need. GAMTI is designed to complement in-house training, and as such, it is crucial to
understand how each company handles their education and how GAMTI can make their training much easier.

So, would I do it again? Absolutely. Although creating GAMTI was by far the most challenging company I have founded so far, it is also the most fulfilling one as I can already see the great responses on how enriching GAMTI is for companies.

We still have a long way to go to partner with everyone in the industry, but as they say – the first step is always the hardest. So thanks for letting me take the first step and change how we look at education in the world of global assistance, medical transports and travel insurance.
