Tourists killed in drunk driving incident in Italy
Six German tourists have been killed and four others seriously injured in a drunk driving accident at a ski resort in northern Italy
In the early hours of Sunday morning (5 January), a 27-year-old driver – who was allegedly found to be four times over the legal limit – crashed into a group of tourists who were reportedly waiting beside a coach in Luttach in South Tyrol (known as Luttago in Italian).
The six German tourists – who were all between the ages of 19 and 22, many from the northwest German state of North-Rhine Westphalia – were on a group skiing holiday. In total, 17 people were involved in the incident, and the four that were left seriously injured have been moved to hospitals; two in Austria, one in Bolzano and one in Brunico, according to Alessandro Coassin, Lieutenant of the Bolzano Carabinieri Police Department.
The driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and an investigation into the incident has been opened.
“People in our country are thinking and praying for the victims and their families,” said Minister President of North-Rhine Westphalia Armin Laschet.
