Oshen-King Faisal Hospital, Rwanda, has entered into a long-term partnership with the Spanish Sant Joan de Déu Hospital (HSJD) with the aim to improve patient care through clinical management of paediatric services in the diagnosis and treatment of critical patients.
“This partnership will improve our patient care because it will virtually increase the number of specialists in paediatric services through specific teleconsulting channel and bringing patients and specialists together without necessarily meeting in person,” Dr Edgar Kalimba, Director, Maternal, Child and Women Health at Oshen-KFH told Rwandan news outlet The New Times.
The new link between the hospitals will mean that the four full-time paediatricians at Oshen-King Faisal can consulate some of the 70-strong paediatricians on the staff of HSJD on cases.
Dr Kalimba asserted that due to the smaller staff numbers, general paediatricians are having to manage paediatric sub-specialty areas. The hospital will be able to utilise telemedicine to consult sub-specialty paediatricians at HSJD.
“Through the establishment of a specific teleconsulting channel, the specialists of both tertiary academic institutions will discuss on clinical cases under the following subspecialties: gastroenterology, pathology, neurology, pulmonology, oncology, cardiac surgery, nephrology, rheumatology, infectious diseases and critical care among others,” Oshen-King Faisal said in a statement.
“It helps us to bridge the gap which obviously improves patient care and we also learn. It is skills development as well,” Kalimba added.
