Germany rises to popular spot among US tourists
US tourists flock to Germany during holiday months, according to data from Squaremouth
Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth.com, looked at traveller data from thousands of policies purchased for travel between Thanksgiving and New Year’s in the US. Every year, Germany has consistently risen to the top of the list among European destinations specifically during the holiday travel season.
Throughout the remainder of the year, it is preceded by other popular tourist destinations including Italy, Spain, France and the UK.
Germany rises to seventh spot
Overall, Germany’s popularity rose from the 14th ranked destination to the seventh most popular destination during the holiday season, and first among European countries.
Squaremouth reported that in addition to more travellers visiting Germany during the holidays, these travellers are also spending more money. On average, travellers spend 84 per cent more on trips to Germany during the holiday season than the rest of the year. They also spend less time there, with an average trip length of 11 days during the holiday season, compared to 21 days outside of those months.
Meanwhile, the lingering impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic are evident in their booking behaviour, too, for example showing an increase in travel insurance purchases.
