11 killed, 16 wounded in Istanbul explosion
Eurocross Turkey has informed ITIJ about further developments regarding the terrorist attack that took place on 12 January in central Istanbul. An explosion took place in Istanbul’s heavily touristic Sultanahmet district (pictured) at 10.20 a.m. A suicide bomber infiltrated in a group of tourists, who were accompanied by a local guide, and set the bomb off, causing a massive explosion.
According to the Eurocross Turkey medical team, which were present at the site of the attack and at the hospitals nearby moments after the explosion, there are currently 11 confirmed deceased and 16 wounded. The wounded are being treated in five different hospitals. The hospitals have been flooded with international media and police has been keeping a very tight control on the situation. Eurocross Turkey team has had diplomatic access to many sites, working hand in hand with various Consulates in Istanbul.
Tthe breakdown on the nationalities and the current condition of the wounded:
Haseki Research and Teaching Hospital:
1 German citizen – Condition not known
1 Peruvian citizen – Condition not known
Cerrahpaşa University Hospital:
3 German citizens – General health condition stable
Çapa University Hospital:
3 German citizens – Husband and wife were taken into the operating room. 1 patient’s general condition is stable and is in the emergency room.
Samatya Istanbul Research and Teaching Hospital:
1 Norwegian citizen. Has patella fracture and needs to be operated.
3 German citizens – 2 are in the ICU and 1 in general surgery ward
Bezmialem Vakıf Hospital:
2 German citizens – Have been discharged after recovery.
2 Turkish citizens – 1 is discharged and 1 is still in the emergency ward.
The names of the deceased have not yet been officially announced, however Eurocross Turkey has been informed by the group’s tour operator that the majority of the deceased are likely to be German citizens. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
