Thailand remains a very popular tourist destination, with its Ministry of Tourism and Sports recording a 7.6-per-cent increase in foreign arrivals in the first six months of 2012 – a total of 10.49 million arrivals. January boasted the highestrecord, with 1.9 million arrivals, while March recorded the best growth, with a year-on-year rise of 11.99 per cent. The figures definitely seem to justify the country’s position at number 11 on the UN World Tourism Organisation’s list of the most popular worldwide tourist spots.
More than half of the recorded visitors came from East Asia, with 5.4 million tourists, while the second highest proportion of tourists came from Europe, with 2.9 million visitors. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports expects that visitor numbers will surpass its target of 20.5 million by the end of the year.
