Gunmen target tourist resort in Mali

Salif Traore, Mali’s security minister, told Agence France Presse that two people have been killed and two others injured at the luxury resort of Le Campement Kangaba, east of the capital Bamako, after four assailants wielding machine guns stormed the resort. One of those killed was confirmed as being Franco-Gabonese. The four suspects were all killed by Malian security forces, and 32 other guests were rescued from the resort.

The US embassy in Bamako had warned of ‘possible future attacks on Western diplomatic missions, other locations in Bamako that Westerners frequent’ earlier in June. According to BBC correspondent Alex Duval Smith, many expats and wealthy Malians go to Kangaba at weekends, to enjoy the pools, cocktail bar, canoeing facilities, and other activities for children.
