It has been reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is cutting its epidemic prevention programmes in 39 out of 49 countries due to a lack of funding.

In a statement, the CDC said that it is ‘currently participating in a deliberative policy process to determine our commitments moving forward’ and that it was awaiting the administration's new budget, which is expected in late February.

The CDC is reported to be first scaling back in China, Pakistan, Haiti, Rwanda, and Congo.

The former Chief of the CDC said that the decision to cut back on epidemic prevention activities overseas could be extremely dangerous for the US as it ‘would significantly increase the chance an epidemic will spread without our knowledge and endanger lives in our country and around the world’.
