According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Spain will likely replace the US as the second-largest tourism destination in the world this year – despite terrorist activity and the independence crisis in Catalonia. The country welcomed approximately 82 million visitors in 2017, and all signs point to this year building on that, although it will be the spring before the figures can be compared with definitive numbers from the US. France is expected to retain its position as the world’s number one tourism destination.

Globally, the number of tourists travelling in 2017 rose by seven per cent compared with the previous year.
