Zanzibar to introduce mandatory travel insurance
Visitors will need to acquire a travel policy from the government-owned Zanzibar Insurance Corporation prior to travel
The government of Zanzibar – a semi-autonomous territory of Tanzania – has announced that travel insurance will be mandatory for inbound visitors from 1 October.
Insurance must be purchased from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, and will apply up to the maximum visit duration of 92 days. Policies includes “comprehensive” coverage for emergencies, “including repatriation, evacuation, and related contingencies”.
The requirement is applicable to “all foreigners – excluding residents – entering Zanzibar” via either “the seaport or airport”.
The government affirmed that a QR code would be provided to prospective visitors before embarkation to the island, but warned that failure to meet this requirement may result in denial of entry at border checkpoints.
They also stated that the measure was being implemented “to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all foreigners, and mitigate any possible risk pertaining to their travel” to the territory.
The Sri Lankan government recently announced a new visa waiver scheme under a six-month pilot programme.
