US international travel on the rise
The number of travellers heading to overseas destinations from the US was up 13 per cent for the first two months of 2012, a year-to-date increase of six per cent from 2011. The figures – from the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI) in the International Trade Administration, US Department of Commerce – show that as of February this year, US travel to overseas markets topped 3.8 million. The Caribbean was the most popular destination with an increase of 14 per cent, taking total traveller numbers to one million, while Europe showed a nine-per-cent increase, with 1.1 million travellers. US travel to North American destinations reached 4.3 million, a one-per-cent increase, while general air travel was up by six per cent.
