Travellers concerned about anti-tourism in popular destinations
Over half of travellers are worried about the potential impact of over-tourism and anti-tourism movements on their autumn travel plans, according to Squaremouth
The travel insurance comparison site also reported that despite this, 90% of travellers are still planning to travel to a “heavily touristed” destination.
These figures came from a survey conducted by Squaremouth between 26 August and 13 September 2024, which had over 5,000 respondents from among its customers.
In response to this concern, over a fifth (22%) of respondents said that they were purchasing a travel insurance policy for the first time this autumn.
Squaremouth also highlighted key forms of disruption that may result overtourism or anti-tourism. This includes:
- Delays due to general overcrowding, as well as anti-tourism strikes, demonstrations, roadblocks, or traffic incidents
- The closure of destinations due to environmental impact or overcrowding
- In extreme cases, rioting that may lead to unsafe conditions – with travellers requiring evacuation.
In response to overtourism, the Greek government announced plans to introduce a €20 fee for tourists visiting the popular islands of Santorini and Mykonos on cruise ships during the high season summer months.
