Thai flooding prompts advisory
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is currently advising against all but essential travel to the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, Thailand, saying that British nationals on these islands should consider leaving if it is safe to do so. Storms and heavy rainfall have caused flooding and damage along the southern coast of Thailand. Affected provinces include Krabi, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Surat Thani (including the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao), Phattalung, Chumphon, Trang and Satun. Electricity and communications are currently disrupted across the region and there is a continued risk of mudslides and flash flooding in these areas. The FCO said: “Ferry services between Surat Thani mainland, Koh Samui Island and Koh Phangan have resumed, but are subject to severe delays and further cancellations due to rough seas. Check with your tour operator before you travel.” There are power cuts and food/water shortages in some parts of Koh Samui. Some roads and towns, including coastal areas popular with tourists, are flooded. Transport to, from, and around the island is currently disrupted. Nakhon Sri Thammarat airport is temporarily closed and flights are suspended due to runway flooding. A landslide has also caused destruction and a number of deaths in Khao Phanom. The airport and coastal resorts in Krabi have not been affected, but there is heavy rainfall in the area.
