Storms in Europe trap tourists
According to civil protection authorities, 11 people have been killed by storms in Italy, while the rains and violent winds have left motorists and tourists stranded in other parts of Europe. Flooding and fallen trees have led to blocked roads and power cuts in southern and central Europe, while thick snow is affecting French and Italian mountain regions and has trapped hundreds of drivers in their cars, and tourists in hotels. “We are facing one of the most complex meteorological situations of the past 50 to 60 years,” said Angelo Borrelli, Head of the National Civil Protection Agency.
The Italian media reported that around 170 people, including tourists and hotel staff, were stranded by heavy snowfall at the Stelvio Pass on the Swiss border, while in Venice flooding has led to tourists being barred from St Mark's Square, with the high water peaking at 61 inches. Meteorologists have said that they expect the harsh weather to gradually ease in Italy. In the meantime, tourists should be aware of the situation and might wish to reconsider travelling to affected areas.
