Spring breakers choose their destination
Orlando and Cancun are once again the top destinations for prospective Spring Breakers, according to new research from Allianz Global Assist.
Spring Break season in the US takes place between 23 February and 16 April, and Allianz has found that most travellers will be heading away for between five and eight days. Orlando was the top domestic destination for travellers, with 9.5 per cent looking to head to the Florida city for their getaway. Phoenix came in second (5.2 per cent), while the hot climes of Honolulu (4.7 per cent) took third spot.
Internationally, Cancun in Mexico was the favoured destination by some distance, with 16.7 per cent of travellers choosing to head there. Mexican destinations generally proved popular with spring breakers, with San Jose Del Cabo (6.3 per cent) and Puerto Vallarta (5.1 per cent) making up the top three international destinations. The only international destination in the top ten that was not either in Central America or the Caribbean was London, UK (2.8 per cent).
“Americans are opting for sun and fun this Spring Break, with a majority of travellers planning domestic and international beach getaways, whereas last year many opted for a ski destination,” said Daniel Durazo, Director of Communications for Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Given recent concern over travel to Mexico, our data shows the resilience of the country’s top destinations and the confidence that Americans have in Mexican resorts. Travel insurance will be an important consideration for Spring Break travellers this year, especially for those who want protection from covered unexpected events that may occur before or during their trip.”
